Here is the black swallowtail that I posted earlier that was hanging on the door of my tank. :) Still don't know if he's going to emerge this year yet but he has changed SO MUCH, this picture does not do it justice, He's covered with the most beautiful shades of browns and tans and is really very lovely!

Here is one of the Monarch cats silked up to a plant leaf and ready to become a beautiful chrysalis. They do this very quickly, I hope I can catch it in the act tomorrow. (Please don't make fun of my stickers either! lol :P )

ANNNND! Voila! Monarch Chrysalis! again, this picture does not do it justice, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! It's a gorgeous mint green color and it has gold and iridescent spots all around it. Here's to hoping this one is not devoured by Tachinid fly larva. I gathered this one from the garden in this state and it's not already gone, which is a good sign. However, those little dark spots could be a sign of another common Monarch parasite. :/ Poor little guy, Hope he makes it!

Just to show you how extremely small these are. My index finger. Hard to believe a full sized (but scrunched up) butterfly is going to come out of this!

Pretty! And it kinda looks like the monarch chrysalis has Swarovski crystals on it. It's truly a piece of natural beauty. Thanks for the update!

Brilliant update - I've been dying to hear how they are getting on!

This afternoon I found a caterpillar in my garden on a Buddleia cutting that I have tried to get to root. A pic is below. I have tried to identify it but can't seem to find the same pic on the net and my wildlife book is rubbish!!! I tried the site referenced previously but they are for the USA and I am in the UK. If anybody can tell me what it is I'd be grateful for the :help:

I looked up UK moth caterpillars, if it is a moth one, and got the Oak Eggar. http://www.uksafari.com/oakeggars.htm

It seemed the closest thing to it, they're seen between May to September, and it looks similar to your pic.

I wouldn't know truly, but even though I would never hold one (I have a horrible fear of bugs) I love looking at them. So beautiful!

:o yeah! That looks a lot like him. I tried to take a look myself, but jeeze! You guys in the UK sure have a lot of fuzzy caterpillars!! I def could not say for sure, maybe you can post the pic on a UK site and have someone identify it for you. This is the site I browsed on for a bit. http://ukmoths.org.uk/index.php

Well, well, well.. I knew this guy was going to shed today and I kept running outside to check him every hour or so before work. I realllly wanted to see it in action but after a few no-goes I went in and told myself a watched pot never boils and read a few chapters of Game of thrones. About an hour later on my way out I checked and DANG IT! I guess he didn't want me to see him change his clothes!!! :cray:
He was still wiggling when I took this shot. OH well! Maybe I'll catch the next one! :) There is always tomorrow!
Image

and his other little buddy. I got my eyes on you for tomorrow!!!
