I think most of the beaders on here just open up the sprite you want to make in a program like Paint and then just zoom in to pick out the colours. If you want to use one of the patterns from the cross-stitch section you will need either PC Stitch for the .pat files or KG Chart for the .sth files.

All i do is import a sprite into paint...zoom it to about 600 or 800 (view ->zoom -> custom) and then put a grid on it (view ->show grid). If you want to make bigger and more complicated projects you can use programs like PerlerPal but sometimes the palettes are off so you'll have to improvise the colours.

D:

I've been using Paint since 1995...

I have never ONCE seen that "view grid" option before. It's there now... how long has it been a feature of Paint?

*thinks back on all the times she made her own custom grids in paint, or used excel and colored the cells...*

T_T I have shame...

Paint>View>Zoom>Large View
Paint>View>Zoom>Show Grid

The image must be enlarged for the option to become available.

As a shortcut, you can press Ctrl+PgDn to enlarge (or Ctrl+PgUp to shrink to normal size) and then Ctrl+G to add the grid. If you still need it enlarged, go to View>Zoom>Custom and bump it up to 600% or 800%

For sprites, head to http://www.spriters-resource.com/, if you need mario, pick the game system you want to reference, like NES or SNES, and pick a game that you want to extrapolate him from. Right click the image and store the file in a place you can remember, such as My Pictures in a new folder called Sprites. Open MSPaint, File>Open and find your image. Enlarge the image, cut out the one u want. When the dotted line is where you want to crop the picture, press Ctrl+C to copy. Then go to File>New and press Ctrl+V to paste you new sprite. Follow the instructions at the top to enlarge the image and add the grid and presto! You are on your way to perlerizing mario.

Good luck

Thanks for the the spritesresource link! I hadn't seen that on the board yet and I'm SO happy to find images of Legacy of the Wizard!! (I thought I'd have to resurrect the old NES and take some pics.) Yeah, I'm a dork, but I miss that game SO much. If only they had the dragon mural (and some other scenes) in there. :(
