need help making wood sprite

Post by viper »

Hi all

Was very inspired to create a wood sprite out of 8bit videogame character:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Sy9O7n ... -fresh+div
the actual video starts at: 2:14

here is the sprite on perlerpal:
http://www.edsalisbury.net/projects/per ... umbers=off

unfortunately, this is my first time I am doing something like this and not very confident on tackling something like this. maybe because I cant find a how to doc or video :cray:
I also searched this forum on how to make one similar but cant find any resources. From my understanding, he says hes using 1x2 inch wood pieces which he then stacks the wood tallest wood from ground up. Would it better to use 1 by 1 wood? or 1 by 2?

Any other help would be great.

hey! I made some wood sprites here...

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1319

I was using 3/4" thick wood (which is usually called 1" wood)...make sure you bring a tape measure to the store to buy wood, they are never labeled the actual thickness.

I think a 1" is a good thickness.

1. I drew the design on the wood with pencil and a ruler. (If your wood is 3/4" thick, then each pixel is 3/4" by 3/4")

2. I used a mitre saw for big straight cuts, and to get the basic shape out of the wood.

3. I used a jigsaw for the more detailed cuts.

4. sand it nice and smooth

5. paint.

there is probably a better way of doing this, but those are the tools I have...

feel free to ask some more questions if this is confusing...

Thanks for the reply johloh. The wood sprites you did are awesome! :nod best of luck with your future projects.
What do you think is the best way of cutting the wood? your method or cutting the 1x1 pieces wood individually and sticking them all together like in the above youtube link?
I got loads of wood glue :D

ah, I didnt watch the whole video I skipped around, I definitely did not cut little squares. that would have driven me crazy. I just cut the whole shape and painted the squares areas on.

I used acrylic, but I'm sure you could use spray too, youd just need to be careful of overspray.
