Wow... I didn't heard about that game, its huge success... and its sudden end. But when I saw the pictures, it reminded me an older french game I used to play : "Piou-Piou contre les cactus", by KEK (2011)... It looks like I'm not the only one :

It's sad that people were accusing him of stealing the sprites from Mario. (And going so far as to send him death threats because of it.) They look oh so slightly similar, but they were definitely his own. I heard today that the main reason he got rid of the game was because of it's addictive nature. He had wanted it to be something to just kill 5 minutes with when you needed to but it ended up becoming way more than that.
