Wow, this is so beautiful. I made the mistake of showing it to my fiancee, now he's asking me why I can't make him one . I wish I had your patience and skill. :)

I only just found this thread and my god, this is a great project and your work on it is fantastic! I've done some embroidery before and I'm trying to remember what I used for detail work... I think i usually did back, stem or split stitches... You could try a split stitch, it will be slightly bulkier than a backstitch though. Chain stitches can also work for lines. An outline (stem) stitch might be what you want to use.

that webpage has beautiful photos of different stitches so hopefuly one of them will work!

I would use short and long stitch. Its similar to satin stitching but is what people doing needlepainting do. Trish Burr is who I would google to see the amazing types of things you can do with this technique. It gives a surprisingly in depth and realistic look to it, or it can if that's how you want it to. At least for the face. For the eyes, eyebrows and lips I'd free hand them. I don't think there's any particular stitch that will make it work well for such tiny details and if you're long/short stitching you can work it into that.

You're not alone in having this difficulty. Two of my favorite bloggers Mary Corbett on Needle'N'Thread and Susan Elliott on Plays With Needles have both had issues with faces. Susan actually though did quite a bit of research and has some great links as to various places that helped her figure out how to do things. Apparently there's a good book out there all talking abouthow to do portraits, although I can't attest to how good it is.

Thanks for all this info, I think I have some research to do now. My plan is to do a few practice faces and maybe post them to see what everyone thinks. This won't be for a little while though, I'm having to much fun with the background right now. I'll try to post an updated pic tonight or tomorrow

So I meant to post weekly, but life happens and I get lazy about turning my computer on for days at a time. So here is the most up to date WIP pic I have. I've spent about another 10 hours on it....I think..... I lost count after 3 hours or so, but I've spent 7 episodes of Hemlock Grove working on it after that. I'll just stick with 10, it seems like a good number!

I don't know much about embroidery, other than the satin stitch and long and short stitch tutorials which have been posted on SS. I'm really impressed with how the mandalas behind her have the stitching going in the "right direction" - what techniques are you using?

The vast majority of this is done using split stitch. Its a very sturdy stitch that is hard to mess up, and looks good even if all your stitches arent the same length. I like satin and long and short stitch, but I become to much of a perfectionist with them, and they are much easier to damage.

Here is a quick tutorial I found with the split stitch technique I use, just skip to 1:10
