Re: APRIL Challenge - Samplers

Post by blackmageheart »

OK let me address some of the points made.

Yes, a sampler is traditionally done on one piece of material and ours will be no different. A band sampler is only different in the idea that each band can be its own theme. Here is an example:

So, if you can imagine something similar, but instead of seasons it's games. I hope that makes sense to some of you! Merrywether's samplers are a good example of what can be done. Here is one of her Zelda ones (I couldn't find her thread so it's her Etsy listing, sorry!):

I'm pleased that people like the idea of adding their own touches. Aside from popping your name on there, it'll be something you might want to keep or display and so you have to like what you've made. And any little changes people want to make will just make it that bit more personal, or I think so anyway. And of course I am aware of cost factors for some people, so nobody worry about having to go out and buy special things. This could be a good way to use up that piece of aida you didn't know what to do with, or maybe you have some lengths of thread you saved from another stitching. :D

Random choice of the games seems like a good idea. All bands will be available as patterns after the event anyway, and it may give some people a chance to stitch things they might not otherwise have tried. Always good to try new things! So if most people are down with that, it'll be very easy for me to do and can be done quickly. If that's the case, I may extend the time to design the bands by a couple of days to get a good range of ideas!

Let's also take this opportunity to learn about some of the history. It's interesting to know where your craft came from and why things were done. :)

Definitely. When I first learned why they were called samplers - as a sample of one's acumen with different techniques - and that they were ways of preserving techniques across generations, it really got me interested. I've been meaning to learn more about them for a while. How often do we do something challengeish on the board with the added bonus of educating ourselves? :P

Aww thanks blackmageheart for including my sampler as an example.

Here is the link to my thread that you were looking for. :D

I don't know if I will be able to participate in the challenge, but I would like to contribute since video game samplers are a great love of mine

I would be happy to design some bands for this challenge. If anyone has suggestions for games they would like to see bands for, let me know.
I think so, Brain, but can the gummi worms really live in peace with the marshmallow chicks?
I think so, Brain, but if they called them "sad meals" nobody would buy them.

It is a Pokemon one, I took the Cheri Berry and made it a sort of decorative background to the standard Pokeball and the Gracidea Flower. (Are we allowed to alter the sprites?)

m4pl3g1rl, I like that one!

Sofara, I like the OOT too!

I might be participating in this one just so that I can do some of these bands!

I am confused on what the challenge is - the design or stitching a set of designs? If it's the later I don't really understand what there is to "judge" if everyone is doing the same thing... Maybe I misread something?

Design question: Do these have to be cross-stitch only or can I include other stitches? I know I'll need back-stitches for sure for one of my ideas. I'd also be happy to include instructions with my patterns for the stitches if needed.

This is a really neat idea. I haven't done a sampler since I was in grade school, and it was nothing special lol.

Okay, here's my (first) entry:

Metroid II sprites. Bonus points if you use neon green Light Effects floss. :D The lovely thing about Metroid is that palette swapping is an integral part of the series, so by default color editing is encouraged.

I know I complained about the likelihood of bog standard games clogging up the works, but I really wanted to put that Spazer crab in a sampler band. :P

Thankyou so much BMH! I had no idea what you guys were on about until you put up examples. I get it now.
Though as said by Kuja I think theres still things to be pointed out.

I also understand wanting to stay clear of games that have been done to death. However I know I wouldn't want to stitch games I've never heard of let alone played. At least I know and love and played mario, zelda etc. Wouldn't have minded if it was the colouring book idea. But samplers seem a lot more personal, if I do it and show my family, they will ask about the symbols and games, one of the reasons i 'd want to know what i'm stitching.

Plus I always thought samplers were supposed to show your stitchy knowledge, we are all at different levels, I mean I can do lazy daisies but have no hope with french knots. Are they going to end up so different from each other it fails to be a stitch a long?

I'm sorry, i'm not in a mood or anything, just would like some clarity. Also how long will this challenge be? I'm rather speedy when I want to be, but can't for the life of me see me doing a whole sampler in a month!

Perhaps I am in a mood... I can only apologise, I been stressed recently, not to mention I really want to do a challenge and get it done, just once! I sometimes feel on the outside looking in and I want to join in!

I think it would be cool for everyone to throw out their band ideas, and instead of assigning which ones are done, leaving it open so everyone can pick their favorite 4 bands (or more if they're ambitious) as well as customize colors. Would give a bigger variety of end products.
