This would make a good present for my mom. What program is needed to download the pattern? Or can it be done without downloading the pattern? I'm kinda new.

You can use the jpeg image to work from, or use the .sth file. You can open this file in a program called KG Chart, which is a free cross stitch program that a lot of people on the forum use.
