My first project- Chun Li/Cammy cushions WIP

Post by DigiPep »

Hello again!

My first project for the site, I'm proud to say, is now complete!

Yep, I know I said that I'd have these finished for the middle of Feb, and I tried to get all the stitching done, I really did, but once I'd started the backgrounds, I never realised how long they would take! It seemed that they would never get finished, so I had to keep my chin up and just keep stitching!
....Admittedly, I also suffered from a new condition that has recently appeared- don't know if you've heard of it- it's call "I just can't stop playing Marvel vs Capcom 3 because it's really good and I've waited 10 years for this game"....

So, After finishing both characters off, I had to stretch the canvasses. This sounds really complicated, but all it means is that you pull the canvas on the reverse side back into a square, pin it to a board and then spray it with water. The water dissolves the starch in the canvas but then dries it back into the canvas, making it nice and neat. I've attached a picture of both canvasses before and after- you can really see the difference (I mentioned this in one of my first posts- not using a frame causes this distortion (but using a frame slows down stitching to a snail's pace).
this shows how the canvasses look after stitching and when they are on the board drying

After a day or so drying on the boards (it doesn't take long), I just had to sew up the cushions, inserting a zip, and then stitching on a bit of braid to finish off the edges.

I'll be posting an in-depth guide to creating a tapestry (sorry non-UK residents- I mean needlepoint) cushion, with detailed images about stretching and sewing it up- I thought it best to put it in the techniques section, if you'd like to have a look.

I've really enjoyed making these- the colours have come out really well- and they will take pride of place in my games room.

....problem is, now I need a new project!

I love these! The colours are lovely, and the backgrounds really give them that finished look. Well done!
I have some tapestry wools that I acquired a while back, and I just don't know what to do with them...so I'm looking forward to reading your guide :)
