Thanks, everybody!

Day 5: Decided to just close in the back of the legs, and maybe i'll hinge the curved part to be able to step into them easier. Covered the outside edges of the legs in masking tape, cut the tube down for the head, and carved strips out of a styrofoam wreath for ridges on the helmet. The head looks a bit short here, but it will have an additional styrofoam rounded chin, and maybe a neck if I can figure out what to use. Right now i'm thinking about mounting the whole head to a bicycle helmet, so that way it will turn when I turn my head. I'll have to be careful to keep my chin steady though. We'll see what happens.

How difficult will sitting, bathrooming, and fighting be in the finished product?

This!
I was gonna go as a Thwomp one year after I aquired a large box. About halfway through making it I realised the difficulty in going to the bathroom, along with general mobility. Plus there was no way to sit when dressed in a giant box.

Haha, it will be impossible. I only need to wear the costume for about an hour, and I don't expect to sit. I will be taking elevators and not stairs. My only consideration in convenience is I want to be able to fully put it on and off by myself, so if a bathroom emergency, etc. arises, I won't need assistance. I'll step into the legs, put the torso on over my head, and then put the head on. Haven't decided yet if the arms will be attached to me, or the torso. #futureproblems

Come on, people! No pain no gain! There are so many ways around this. You can get an empty bottle and a funnel for #1. For #2 it's a little trickier. A bottle and a funnel COULD work if it's the right consistency, but otherwise you might just want to try to catch it in a baggie and tie the top closed. Of course, with your arms in boxes as well this might be difficult so you're going to need a friend. A really close friend.

Also, I love how you mention fighting because now I can only picture a big legoman doing the whole chest out, arms to the side, 'let's go, bro! Bring it ON!' thing.

As for the costume, I am SO VERY excited to see how this turns out! What you have so far looks spot on. Halloween is my favorite holiday. It makes everyone so creative. :)

Unfortunately I've been sick the past couple of days (booo) so I haven't been able to do much at all on this. I did manage to papercraft a prototype hand. I will wear rubber gloves to cover my wrist/arms, and I will hopefully make the "claw" part out of a sheet of craft foam. I am going to attempt to sew it with a sewing machine; I haven't tried that with foam before so I hope it holds up. Packing tape will be a backup plan.

I sincerely doubt sewing it will work. Just a little flexing stress will pull the stitches right through the foam. Packing tape might be good, but cyanoacrylic or epoxy / resin glue would probably be even better (depending on the foam - some glues might melt some foams).

Well, sewing my test piece actually went great, even turning it inside out and tugging on it, the holes didn't tear. When I sewed the actual rounded pieces though, it jammed up a bit and made the holes too close together, and yeah it tore straight through. I ended up covering the whole thing in packing tape (not just the edges) and it gives it a nice, hard plastic look. A bit rougher than the rest of the suit, but i'm ok with it.

I see what you mean about the plastic look! Hell, maybe you should cover the whole thing in packing tape. :P Or wait - better yet, glossy Mod Podge?
