the needles you need are called Tapestry Needles - and as mentioned before they are blunt. Buy a pack as you will want replacements on hand when the nickel finish wears off.
I personally find using plastic canvas to be much harder to use than fabric. I would suggest starting with a small piece on aida cloth.

I got everything you all said, even some aida cloth when I feel comfortable enough to move to that. Here's my first cross stitch: I messed up on a few pixels and over the course of my stitching learned how to make them a little nicer...not too bad for the first thing. How do you all fix the backing on plastic canvas? I bought some felt but am having a hard time figuring out just how to attach it and how to cover up the plastic from showing on the boarders of my cross stitch.

I use felt with an adhesive backing, but if you just have normal felt that isn't sticky, cut a piece bigger than your piranha plant, glue it to the back (most people on here use a brand called Modge Podge) and wait for it to dry, then cut off the excess. I do love your piranha plant, though!

I backstitch / running stitch my felt to the back of plastic canvas pieces. But glue or adhesive felt works great too!

I don't know why it never crossed my mind to sew the felt to the canvas! Would have saved a lot of headaches looking for the damn adhesive felt!
