Sewing circles

Post by Eliste »

Do you go to one? Would you if you haven't? Did you like it or not?

There's one starting up literally around the corner from me. It's aimed more at knitters and crocheters but I'm considering crashing their party since its actually closer than the local Spar (the distance most likely to be cover able upon lack of brain).

I've only really flirted with them before, primarily for classes, and just wondering what others find when sewing with others and if it's worth the effort.

Hello Eliste,

I'm in a knit and crochet circle :) for almost 4 years now.
we see each other each week in a brasserie / restaurant (we are well known there now, we are "VIP" hehe... and most of time, customers don't seem to find it -I mean, "people knitting in a restaurant"- strange at all).
I love these meetings ; we laugh a lot, drink belgian beers, eat together ; and of course, learn a lot about knitting and crocheting tips, ideas, patterns, wool shopping, and so on.

Would you think it was weird if someone who wasn't knitting/ crocheting came along and did some other craft instead?

Not at all !!
we have no "charter" or something like that ;)
the only limit is that our hobby should not take up a lot of room, and not make too much noise, since we are at table :)
(so we can't come with a sewing machine for example !)
What would you like to do as a hobby ?

I'm midway through an embroidered blanket. It's the only project I have going right now with college taking up most of my time. I normally just put it on my lap, which is terribly warm and comfy.

I think you should just go ahead and bring it. If they're anything like every single crafter I've met they'll be fascinated by all types of crafts. If they do turn out to be craft elitists, then don't worry about it. You've tried and that's all that counts.

My mother and I have been to a few meetings for a local craft group. There are women knitting, crocheting and embroidering as well as piecing quilts and dress making. The venue has a lot of tables and space, plus a well-stocked craft cupboard.

I really enjoy the chatter while crafting. Everyone is very supportive and willing to teach and share skills. I've also found it helpful in keeping me motivated. As in "Oooh, I'm gonna work on this so I can show the ladies next week".

Thanks. This helps. It is literally around the corner so I may as well go once.
