So the half a stitch up and half a stitch back method saves you 0.3 inches of thread per inch of sitches on 14 count?

0.416" per inch of stitches is saved.

Well, all that lovely math aside I'm actually with Pixel Stitches. I alternate my stitches as I work a piece... and I've yet to have another cross-stitcher comment on the 'inncorrectness' of it. It does give the piece a feeling of movement, but I also like the texture it provides visually.

All I can say is that if you do an entire piece going the same way but have one or two going the other way, it is noticeable. Trust me, I've done it.
I wonder if changing stitch direction by color makes a cool pattern... may have to experiment with a small piece.

I'm not a math whiz like Icelandic Hitman, but it seems to me that the important thing is how you cross your stitch, and not necessarily having to do a whole row of half stitches first. For instance, when you finish one stitch and you go to start the next, you can do it two different ways. One way, you'll be starting in the closest hole. The second way you'll be starting in the farther hole. If you stitch this second way, you'll be using twice as much thread on the back of your work. Does this make sense?
