More of a guideline. Like LL says, it's just to try and avoid the huge images, and we won't be going around with the banhammer just because people's images might be a bit over. But I would hope to encourage people to stay within the guidelines, it's better for everyone that way! :D
Okay! Didn't think it would be strictly, but i just wanted to clarify that :)

And great to hear that Spin is a Global Mod!

I think spinuntilyoufall used to be a cpoyright person, so we'll ask her what we can/can't do, and go from there?
It's definitely worth talking to an editor about as they're going to know more about it than I do. As far as I know, though we are pretty much out of luck on being able to use anything with a video game character in it:
The legal status of fan made art in America may be tricky due to the vagaries of the United States Copyright Act. Generally, the right to reproduce and display pieces of artwork is controlled by the original author or artist under 17 U.S.C. § 106. However, fan art using settings and characters from a previously created work could be considered a derivative work, which would place control of the copyright with the owner of that original work. Display and distribution of fan art that would be considered a derivative work would be unlawful.

However, American copyright law allows for the production, display and distribution of derivative works if they fall under a fair use exemption, 17 U.S.C. § 107. A court would look at all relevant facts and circumstances to determine whether a particular use qualifies as fair use; a multi-pronged rubric for this decision involves evaluating the amount and substantiality of the original appropriated, the transformative nature of the derivative work, whether the derivative work was done for educational or noncommercial use, and the economic effect that the derivative work imposes on the copyright holder's ability to make and exploit their own derivative works. None of these factors is alone dispositive.

American courts also typically grant broad protection to parody, and some fan art may fall into this category. This has not explicitly been adjudicated with respect to fan art, however. Moreover, while parody is typically afforded protection under § 107, a court must engage in a fact-intensive, case-specific inquiry for each work.
So, as far as something like this site goes, the worst that would happen would be a cease and desist letter - and really we're covered under fair use, since it's not for sale. But once you get into a commercially available book it all gets a bit mushier... Each publisher would need to be contacted for permission to use their characters in a book. It may be worth seeing if we could get permission from some - I don't see Nintendo giving permission, but I'll bet we could get it from some of the smaller studios...

*updates again* you're doing this on purpose now. :P

I was thinking about the image size, should we only make a stipulation on width? Its not like people will have really long but thin images...

I was thinking along the lines of something specifically for video games themselves.

Like, we have the craft section, and maybe a game discussion thread, where we can all help one another to get through games, and such.
Have friendly conversation about what games are good, and why we think so, which are our favorites, etc.

It would be such a great way to make friends, I think. ;3 I haven't put out much input towards anything on the site, so I figured I would. Haha!

Well, Yeah, I guess.

But I feel like it shouldn't be mixed in with a whole pile of other things, you know? xD

Have game discussion stuffed in with like.. what color is your favorite? Seems kinda weird to me. I don't know what everyone elses feelings on his would be, though.

I do understand what you mean. Perhaps it is something we could look at - I'm SURE you could all benefit from my extensive gaming knowledge! :wiz
Hehehe. Joking, of course. Or am I?
Seriously though, it could be an idea to have a little separate place for that sort of thing. Oh, and my favourite colour is blue...like Sonic blue. :sonic

Its worth a try, we can always get rid of it if we don't need it... Not sure how popular it would be, would people use it do you think? People rarely use the chat thingy...

It's just an idea. xD
I don't know what other people will think.

As for that chat, I think a lot of people forget about it because it's all the way at the bottom of the page.. xD

I like this, although maybe it could be the "biggest side" that is resized (for the people who take vertical images)? Scrolling down images is more troublesome than sideways for me but maybe I'm the only one bothered by this, haha~ :choco

I use IrfanView exclusively for image resizing but I'm sure there's a lot of people who won't want to download something just to tweak their images. Is there a how-to-resize thread somewhere to direct people to, one that maybe covers a plethora of resizing instructions on whatever people use? Maybe that's being too fiddly though. ^^;
