I tend to start in bottom corners, just because I find it easier to hold the fabric and stitch quickly from bottom up. And I outline the fabric but I don't grid it, so I need to start out and work in or I'd lose count. And I do as much outlining as I can right off, so that I can get to the big blocks of colour and ditch the pattern. :P

It really depends on what type of stitching I'm doing.

I presume you're most talking about cross/counted stitches, which I start in the center. Then I go to the left, and then right. That way, the left gets finished, can be wrapped up, and stays out of the way of my active right hand.

If I'm not doing counted stuff, I start wherever the pattern demands or seems logical, usually towards the center/left of the piece. Again, this means I'm less likely to be touching previously finished stitches.

It changes every time I do it. If it is a multi-page monstrosity I will do top left. Other than that I start where the whim takes me.

Only thing I can say is I prefer doing boarders first so I know stuff fit.

In the middle if I want the stitching to be in the centre of the fabric. After that I go left then right as Eliste does :D
If it's something small, or an awkward shape or something equally as weird, I start somewhere on the left of the pattern and head right. :)

I start wherever the mood takes me, but usually in a corner. With the Koi I started in the middle, but that's mainly because I found it hard to grid out on the aida this time.
Working on:
Retro X & Y! - lost the pattern and fabric, but it's resurfaced :D ...and i've lost it again lol

Small projects I start in the middle and work my way out, big projects I start in the top left corner and work my way right and then down.

When I first started stitching I started in the middle and worked out. I never liked doing it that way because I felt like I kept backtracking, wasting floss, and just felt overall disorganized. Now I start in the up left corner and work from there (I start there also because I apparently have lost my mind and only do multi-page monstrosities now =P).

I always used to begin in the centre, but have rercently begun starting in the top left corner. I just find it's more manageable, especially with larger projects. I remember one project where I started in the centre and worked up to the left and top, and found that I'd miscounted somewhere, and my top border wasn't even! That was a pain.

I start from the top left corner and work.... whatever block of color (that's relatively close) I feel like doing for the rest of the pattern.
