Wheel of Time Pattern

Post by AreYouStillThere »

Hi all, this is my first pattern request! But a long time follower of these boards :)

I'm getting all jazzed up about the Wheel of Time series finishing this next year, and decided a cross stitch would be a great way to commemorate it. Here is the base image I'd like to use:

Image

However I was thinking of doing it on black aida with gold or yellow thread, and maybe silver highlights around the edges that are currently white in the picture. Hopefully the finished project would be about 8x8 or 9x9...maybe about 125 to 150 stitches across? I'm not very good at judging sizes.

Any ideas or patterns anyone has would be great! Thank you!

Hi there! Just a couple of questions for you!

By this, do you mean that you want to stitch the whole design in gold/yellow? As in, what is black in the image would be in gold or yellow thread? :D
Also, is 14ct aida what you'll be working with?

EDIT: I had a few minutes and made something up:

Did you have something like that in mind? :D

Oh wow, that looks amazing! Even better than I had hoped, you're a miracle worker. And yes I'm planning on doing it on 14 count aida. After looking at your design I think I'll make the snake bright red (DMC 666 maybe) and the wheel bright yellow (DMC 973?), with the white highlights. Or...something pretty anyway! I've heard so many horror stories of working with gold thread.

Do you have it with grid lines/counters or symbols? I can't wait to start working on this now.

I have the PCStitch pattern file right here! Would you like me to change the pattern to the colours you wanted? I can then put up some PDFs and the .pat file! :D

Metallic thread just takes practice and patience! But I never get tired of plugging "Thread Heaven" - which is a great help when working with metallics. Also, DMC have a new range of metallic thread called Diamant (which is more like embroidery thread) - I've heard they are rather nice to use! :D

Hope I've been of some help to you today! XD

Ok. So. I'm having a crisis.

I finished up the snake in the bright red. It looks amazing!

You can see my work in progress here. It doesn't have the red complete but you get the idea.

Then I started on the wheel in the yellow and...it just doesn't work. The white completely fades away. I brought out my thread collection and tried to find something else, but nothing looks right.

I need advice!!

I'm so worried I spent all this time on it and it's not going to work out :(

Which I know for a lot of people on this forum, this project is a drop in the bucket, but this is not only my largest project ever, it's my first cross stitch! (I usually do needlepoint)

So what color should the wheel be? Any ideas?!

Hi, sorry to hear you're having trouble with the pattern! Looks really good so far though, and I'm pleased to see it's progress. (It's always nice to see your pattern stitched by someone! :) )

On to your problem. The yellow was a rather bright one in the pattern, and it could cause the white to be less prominent. If you still want it to be a yellow tone, may I recommend something like DMC 728, it's still yellow but is more golden and the white shouldn't disappear into it so much. Alternatively, you could try DMC 3820, which is a similar type of colour but darker.

As for other colours, I'm not really sure. Perhaps one of the darker greens available? Or a teal / blue?

3852 is also a golden yellow similar to 3820 but is a bit more on the golden side of the scale between golden and brown. It's almost a mustard color but it's still got a gold tone.
