1. I never use steam and I don't think it recommended.
2. I do iron both sides through a towel.
3. As for a tutorial, I'll tell you what I do personally. The tutorial I learned from, I can't seem to find right now.
a) Soak in cold water with a very small amount (one or two drops) of dish soap up to six hours. It depends on how dirty your piece is. Check it every hour or so.
b) Place onto a towel and let it air dry (don't wring it out).
c) When it is still somewhat damp (after one and a half hours or so) iron both sides through a towel on a medium-high setting.
If there is some fabric that doesn't have stitching, I iron it directly if there are still some severe wrinkles or foldlines.
Aida is cotton as well as DMC thread so you don't have to worry about colours bleeding or discolouring from the heat of the iron.
