Sprite Stitch Board!

So I'm still a little new to the whole cross stitching thing and I've been looking around about dimension and how the dimensions given on KGChart are off and people have said "Do the math." I was wondering what math are they using? I'm just a little confused and was hoping you guys could help me out with this.

In example, I saw this on another thread:

"So if I have a 40 x 120 on 18 count, I know it'll be 2.22" x 6.67" "

They are just dividing the image size by the fabric count so 40 divided by 18 equals 2.2 so your know 40 will take up 2.2 inches. It is a nice simple way of figuring out the size of fabric your will need. You can also multiply to figure out how big you want to make a pattern so if you know you want a 4 inch square on 14 count fabric you would just multiple it to get 56x56 and then you know how big to make your pattern. Hopefully that clears it up for you.

Pretty much, the .sth files (and the .pdf for that matter,) that everyone posts are from a program called KGChart (AWESOME program - it's free, so if you're at all interested in making your own patterns I HIGHLY recommend it!) KGChart will give you the "size" of the pattern on the last page of the pattern, but it has a really bad habit of pulling these numbers out of thin air, so you can't really rely on the size it gives you.

Instead, you have to look at the number of stitches and then divide by the count fabric you are using and it will give you the actual size of the pattern. So, if you're using 14 Aida, that means that there are 14 stitches per inch (sorry if you already knew this, but this threw me for a loop when I first started and I had no idea what everyone was talking about,) so if a pattern in 52 stitches x 52 stitches, you divide by 14 and get 4" x 4".

This is also handy to know because if someone creates a pattern that they want to do in 14 count, but you want to do it in 22 count, you can figure out how big it's going to be no matter what the pattern says.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you look at the signature, you can see that it's only a bot, BMH should delete it soon.

Im new to this so I want to make sure I have this right. I have a pic that is 200x150 and my aida is 11 count so...it would be:

200 / 11 = 18.18 inches? I hope I have this right. I got a 11 count aida that is 30x36 so...yeah.

If you make your pattern a direct 1 pixel = 1 stitch ratio, that would be right. The "count" of aida fabric is how many stitches there are per inch of fabric. That's why dividing the number of stitches by the count will give you the size in inches.
