What is the most helpful thing you've learned?

Another part of the project I mentioned will involve me doing a little teaching about cross-stitch.
So I ask you, what is the most helpful thing you've learned about cross-stitching?
OR what was one of the questions you had when you were getting started?

Being told to tuck the thread and work over it instead of try to knot it somewhere, for sure.

Most important!!!! Keep all your stitches facing in one direction!!!

This! Also not to pull your stitches to tight, these 2 things can completely change the outcome of your project.

This may seem totally basic, but using a hoop. Seriously, when I first started cross stitching, I never used a hoop. Now, I can't imagine *not* using one.

Stick to one project at a time. I find it's so much easier to organize and get things completed even if I have a queue of projects waiting to finish one before beginning another.

The best thing I ever learned was never panic - if you do something wrong or mess up somehow then getting your head in a spin definitely does not help!

You found my weakness! I wish I had a clone just so I could get all of the awesome projects I see finished in my lifetime without the urge to start them all and never finish one...
Most helpful thing I've learned I think (as embarrassing as this is) is how to separate floss. I'd hold one end in my mouth and try to separate two from the six and then would have to let the mess unwind...hopefully unknotted. I randomly read somewhere to just take one at a time and pull it straight up and the rest falls back straight instead of knotting up.

- count twice stitch once
-make a working copy of the chart, this way if anything spills on it you haven't destroyed your only copy
-highlight the stitches you've done on the chat so you don't lose your place
-colour any removed stitches in another colour on the chart so that you don't make the same mistake again
-let the needle and thread hang from the back or front of your stitching every 20 or so stitches, helps to prevent knotting!
-hoops or stitching frames help give better tension to fabric
-use the loop knot method for starting your stitches, less wasted thread!
yea i hink thats as many useful tips i can remember right now.
