Jumping in a bit late with my five cents' worth...

I've done some patterns that required mixing threads, and it works nicely especially when you want one coloured area to slowly blend into another one. I've done both full stitches and half stitches with mixed colours, and occasionally even used three or four strands. For instance, two strands of white and one of gray, then one white and one gray, then just one gray... you know?
