Silk Gauze

Post by Ishtar »

Ok, I am looking at either doing a few doll house items to start, then maybe a really large one (heaven help me) but smaller for space reasons.

I guess depending on size I would be doing more of a tapestry than a cross stitch

I am curious on the first count, and questioning my sanity and ability on the second lol

I have a few questions if anyone has used/is experienced with it:

Has anyone used 40ct or smaller? How did it go?
Are there any good technique sites/books/tips you can recommend?
What are some of the problems you have had?

Etc.

Any help appreciated!

When you get really high counts, you're no longer looking to go between threads, just trying to match your stitches- usually over more than one. Its much more sewing rather than up and down and it can be quite difficult to keep it looking correct/in line/straight/consistent. The big thing is that when the count gets up high enough, the threads aren't always consistent in width so its less about counting and more about gauging distance.

Alternatively, you can look into different ways of stitching that isn't cross stitch. There are plenty of other ways that will save you from crossing back.

For dollhouses- one of the important things for it to look right is the scale. If you know the scale of your dollhouse, you can do scale conversions to see what would "look right" if you were doing Aida at that size.

It will be ideally done to 1/12 scale. No house at this stage but some time when I am rich in the future XD

For any of the patterns I have looked at aida would be way too big. Linen maybe could be gotten away with but would probably look a lot chunkier.

Thank you for your advice/help Eliste *bows*

I'd suggest looking into using something like tent stitch instead of cross stitching. When it gets really small, the crossing over makes it stand up really far and tends to look a little off.

Linen would work if it was thin, but it'd really depend on the fabric. Plain cotton would probably also be fine.
