When DMC doesn't come close

Post by shanoa »

I'm working on converting an image into a pattern but I've run into a bit of a snag. It would seem that DMC doesn't make floss in anything close to the colors I need.
This is the image I'm working on. It's another WoW icon.

The problem is with the blues in it. I just can't find a DMC floss that can match them. KG chart used colors that were more muted and more toward purple in color and the blues I tried from the DMC charts come out more like a pastel.

Any tips for getting those vivid blues?

Do you have a larger picture for that?

I know there were a few problems for a Sonic the Hedgehog pattern I'm going to be making. The light green of the trees wasn't matched by anything DMC featured. But they seem to have a wonderful selection of blues (including electric-sort of colors).

I enlarged your picture by zooming in with Photoshop, but there's about 20 shades of blue. I'm sure at least one would match -- out of what I have, I *think* I see 995, 824, 796, and those are just the ones sitting in the "I just bought these and haven't sorted them out yet" pile.

I don't play WoW, or I'd look for another image myself.

Here are some websites that might help...

Unfortunately that is the full size image. What's weird is that I have tried the sites you suggested but they don't seem to have the bright blues I'm looking for here.

At least now I know I'm not crazy though, I was pretty sure there were nice bright blue DMC flosses, I just can't seem to find them.

If you're not ordering floss online and are able to go someplace with a large selection of colours, maybe that would be the best way to select the blue you want. That way you're much more likely to find the right shade of blue. Personally I have a hard time picturing how vivid colours would be in real life based on what they look like on screen... but that's just me.

I've tried sites online that match colors by RGB value and nothing comes anywhere close to being the right shades. I was just at the store yesterday and was looking at floss and it seems that some of them look sorta close, but not really. I'm gonna try fudging the values more with image editing software, but I may just have to give up on that design.
