I'm a dummy and don't know how to use plastic canvas!

Post by jelibe »

Everyone, please help!

I was looking at the DS case that was made some time ago and I thought, I can do that. So today I bought some. I've come home and started reading up on it and it says I need yarn?? Is this wool (knitting)? I'm from the u.k. so some words are a little different.

Also, would like a basic run down of how to work with plastic canvas. Baby language if possible, Lol.

I've just bought some waste canvas also, I think this will be a little easier to work out as its in my area of craft.

You'll need yarn, yes :) I believe they call it wool. It's those large oval things that take up lots of space, usually near the cross stitch isles. You don't actually knit, but generally with needlepoint you make a lot of half stitches. (I didn't see the instructions for the DS case so I don't know if the stitches are different) I don't do it that much so I'm not the best with advice lol. I'm sure the other users will step in and help you out more.

The DS case in question is this one. Did you see this updated set of instructions? I've had this in my bookmarks for a while now fully intending to learn this stuff, but never bothered to get down to it. This one seems to have links to tutorials and nicer pictures than the earlier version you might have seen.

Oh man, there's another plastic canvas site that I absolutely love, but don't seem to have in my del.icio.us bookmarks. This guy had a near full-size Apple II made of the stuff in 3d. You could swap out front sheets to change the screen. He also had some really nifty "3d" moise pointers. Good stuff.

I've bookmarked that now. Thanks for that. Do you really think I'll need a glue gun? I don't have one and I thought maybe I could use I different technique to put it in place, or is this the best way? Do you think it would be a good investment to get one and what other projects could I use it for. I am a complete newby when it comes to new crafts. I generally just stitch and cross stitch.

This site mentions that you can use the whipstitch to stick the pieces together:

It seems to me like stitching them together at 90 degree angles will work as long as your measurements are precise. The other sides should keep it rigid in the end.

Don't use a glue gun! Oh, the humanity. Just tuck your tails like you do with normal cross stitch. If you're try for a pixel by pixel pattern, try using just normal cross stitch. Be sure each of the crosses share holes with the previous one, or your plastic will show. Also, use a whip stitch around the edge for a more finished look. Take into consideration that the whipstitch edging will add bulk to the outer "edge" of the "pixel". Try using no-dye acryllic before you jump on wool. Cheaper and better color selection.

You can always buy self sticking felt from your local craft store :) That's what I bought for a halloween costume. It holds really well. Just a thought

Wow I didn't know you could get stuff like self sticking felt. I shall have to start a list of all the things I'm going to look out for next time I go shopping. Thank you.

I know that there is spray glue that you can use on the felt as well...spray it, let it dry a bit, and then it becomes sticky felt, from what I've heard, but I've never tried it.

Can't say I've ever seen self-sticking felt either though...must keep an eye out for it!
