Word censoring

Post by blackmageheart »

One of the updates to the phpBB software a while ago included a word censor, with a ton of words already in the filter list. Some of these words may offend, but on the whole I think quite a lot of them would not even be used on this board. I believe that the majority of you already keep your posts clean and it seems that the filter is actually stopping you from posting normally on occasion. And that is possibly the worst censorship of all.

Are there words you think should definitely be on the filter list? Or ones that shouldn't? Should the mods remove wildcards, so that accidental filtering isn't a problem? I'd love to have your opinions!

I agree censoring words seems silly. It should be up to the mods/admins of a particular board if they want the filtering or not. Certainly there are probably some boards that will want it since they might have some younger school aged kids on the boards. Overall, I think the people here at Sprite Stitch are mature enough to make smart choices with their words.

I think we can probably manage without a filter. If people suddenly devolve back to early teens, then we can always bring it back in can't we?

I agree with the above, most people are pretty sensible around here (well, with what they say at least :P )

Also, I've been wondering what happens when a certain English town is typed and have been trying to think of an appropriate place to type it... Scunthorpe.

ETA - interesting! If you pop an apostrophe in, the word is filtered, if you don't, it stays the same!

I think the censoring is pretty silly. They're just words and a person's reaction to them is completely subjective. There are words that I have a strong negative reaction to that would not be on that filter list, while I'm pretty sure most (if not all) of the words that are on the list wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I think that part of growing up and becoming an adult is understanding that you can very rarely manipulate your surroundings to make it so that you are never ever even a little bit offended. Now, I also don't think that it should be a free for all where we all see if we can offend each other just for the fun of it.

If there are younger members then I'm sure they've read the words elsewhere. Not like they'd learn anything new from the occasional 'shoot' or 'fudge' or 't watchsitcomsanymore' anyway.

So, down with censorship! Darn the man! Power to the stitchers!

I think that the approach and intent behind one's words are the most important thing, and Sprite Stitchers are generally pretty good about being straightforward, honest, supportive, excited, engaged, and helpful. Not only does that mean that we're less likely to offend each other in general, I think it also means we're more careful with what words we use and the contexts in which we use them, whether it's with strong language or simply describing how much we adore someone's project. :D I certainly wouldn't have a problem with removing the filter.

I'll admit, I'm a bit of a sailor these days as my mother would say, but I do try to keep it clean online. I don't mind if I forget and a curse word gets censored, but if its causing problems for normal speech, then I'm with the others and say let's try it without.

OK, I found the solution! :wiz
I don't often go into my UCP so I totally overlooked it before, but there is an option there to enable or disable the word censoring for each user.

If you wish to disable the filter when you read posts (as that is when the filter is applied) the go to your User Control Panel > Board Preferences > Edit display options and it is the bottom radio button in the top section.

Picture for helps!

Of course, this is not a green light for sailorspeak; I know just about all of you keep your posts clean anyway. But I doubt anyone would mind the odd word here and there! ;)

See, I knew my feed didn't have the censor enabled for some reason!

I like that you can personally choose to have censoring enabled. I personally try to keep my language clean. I may mutter a curse to myself if I hurt myself, or if I am way over the edge annoyed a word or two may pop into one of my sentences, but typically when talking to others and especially online, I tend to keep as clean as possible. If I find that I really need to say an offensive word on a forum or something, I'll usually end up censoring it myself in one way or another.
