But someone like you could certainly do it! And you know, I just had to google you after you said you've been published. I'm super-impressed! Of course, I always knew you were talented. :D
Well it really depends on what you're writing about. I think making a craft book is a lot different from fiction, but there are a few people out there (mr x stitch, world of geekcraft, and the person who published johloh's work) that we could ask, get some advice from, etc.
I think it would be doable...

I've also thought about trying to put together some kind of craft book...The only major workaround is that it would need to contain no copyrighted materials at all...ie no marios, zeldas, or any copied sprite work. that puts a damper on a lot of the projects people around here work on. though it is still possible.

I have contact info of the author of the geekcraft book, and am actually good friends with a editor at the company that published that same book. So if we started to get some material together I could schedule out a meeting possibly.

I like the handbook idea, once its finished I'll take it and post it up on the top of the page. I'll take it off googledocs and just host it on the site.

Can we see if we can get permission to use some of the old game sprites? Would that fall under fair use at all? Some of them are so embedded in pop culture that the game companies might be fine with it

I think spinuntilyoufall used to be a cpoyright person, so we'll ask her what we can/can't do, and go from there?

Johloh has spoken. It will be done!

Right, I've updated the handbook with myself and spinuntilyoufall in it. I've also put the max size for images as 500x500, is that ok do you think?
I've also updated the guides, and the ones we need but don't have are: how to upload images to the site (There is one of these, but its out dated), how to resize images in paint, paintshop and online (I suggest pixlr?) and finishing projects (which I've already asked elliste about). Is everything else ok?

Great!
The only thing I would change at this point is instead of 1st Moderator, 2nd Moderator etc, I'd put the mod groups that we are in. johloh is Administrator, Servo and I are Global moderators and spinuntilyoufall is a Moderator. Not that there's a lot of difference, mind you! :P

I was going to suggest a maximum of 640x480 (easy to resize most resolutions down to this) but 500x500 seems like a nice round number. Anyone else have input on this?

They both sound like good size limits to me. Maybe the 640x480 could sit as the maximum for those projects with a more rectangular shape (eg. world map stitchings etc and other insanity pieces that aren't of a square shape). And to get my stupid question out of the way - would these size limits be strictly set, or more of a guideline?

Also, great work on the handbook!

I think the idea was to avoid massive images, so it wouldn't be too strictly enforced I don't think...

More of a guideline. Like LL says, it's just to try and avoid the huge images, and we won't be going around with the banhammer just because people's images might be a bit over. But I would hope to encourage people to stay within the guidelines, it's better for everyone that way! :D
