Perler Pattern??

Do any of you make perler patterns?
My niece and nephew (twins) were born 11 weeks early, and I have a few pictures of them, and I would like to make them into a small perler picture. I am not sure how to convert a photo into a perler pattern.
I don't want it to be very large. There would be two patterns that would need to be made (one for each baby).
Can anyone help me with this? I have seen examples of people who have done obama, and other people in perler beads, and you totally tell it was obama. I am hoping to achieve this (Can see the babies features, etc in the perler beads)

Size: Not so big (48x48 the biggest)
