They were, but not as often now. Most modern samplers are decorative only, although some people do still practice the old way and use it to sample their stitches.
Our samplers will be basically the same, but with personalisations - that is to say, our own personal touches and tweaks to the stitchings. That could be swapping the palette out for your favourite colours, or using special threads or whatever. But we won't be straying too far from the patterns, to keep a certain level of uniformity.
MeiTow wrote:Kuja -> This isn't really a "challenge" in the sense that we'll be voting and stuff (at least that's the way I understand it). This is taking the place of one of your swaps because of the last one went horribly, I think. This is just something to give us a sense of togetherness without having to rely on sending things to other people.
This is somewhat correct! These stitch-a-longs are replacing the big swap, because I felt like there'd be too much of that per year, what with the mini swap as well. The big swap will be back next year, though! I thought a co-operative event would be in much the same spirit as the swaps, also it adds a bit of variation! There won't be any voting for this as it's not a contest like the usual challenges. I hope that clears that up a bit!

kuja.girl wrote: Now that I have a better understanding of the project I also think that everyone should submit patterns but that the choosing of the bands/order/colors/etc should be left to the individual. That way everyone can make something that they enjoy!
That's a good idea. I was kind of set on everyone doing the same thing because it is a sampler but I understand Bex's concerns about games that I don't like/play/know etc.
I can understand this, but I also understand the earlier point about the usual suspects making it straight in to the sampler. I wouldn't choose to stitch Mario or Zelda or Pokemon in a sampler, not because I don't like them (I do) but because I'd like to try something else out! However, if one or all of those came up in a random selection then I'd still do the best job I could! I have already said all the bands will be available for people to put together themselves at a later time, but as a compromise I'd be willing to ask only for reasonably well-known games in the designs. I'm not sure if that will suit everybody, but I hope it's acceptable.

I love all the designs. I'm happy that people are getting into the spirit of things! I know which ones I'd definitely enjoy stitching the most, but I think I'd be quite happy with anything so far!
Kamfer wrote:All the samplers/suggestions/patterns will be gathered in a thread, and then we choose 4 of them to stitch, and those 4 finished pictures is our contribution to the challenge? So it's kind of an stitch-along-challenge?
While the selection method is still up for debate at the minute, however they are chosen there will be four bands to stitch on to one piece of material, along with a name and the year, maybe a Sprite Stitch thingy too!

Whoa, that Star Fox one is so awesome. :clapping:

All of these are so cool and creative that they're putting my feeble attempts to shame, haha. I whipped together another, though, for one of my favorite RPGs, Chrono Trigger:

Poor Robo doesn't know which way to go. :P

Could be with or without the extra bottom row, like with my previous Castlevania one. I used a little sparkle animation from the game for that. It could be fun to use some other stitches for the sparkles rather than all cross stitches as shown. I think it could be easy to incorporate some back stitches, lazy daisy stitches, and/or French knots.

That's a fantastic scaling job, Aggie - all the details are there, and everyone's instantly recognizable. Frog came out especially well. I also like the idea of using alternate stitches for the sparkle line. :)

I would suggest renaming this from challenge to "stitch-a-long" then as it was, and still is, very confusing otherwise.

I... don't like the restriction to "popular games." Most of the bands that have been posted are from games that I 1) never played or 2) don't really like (I'm not judging the bands as they look great, just the games). That's just my 2 cents on that topic, do as you will :)

Here's hoping I can get the 2 bands I would like done, done (neither is pixel based so I'll be hand designing them).

kuja, I'm really looking forward to what you come up with - your designs are always top-drawer, and usually for awesome games which I've never played. :D

All the credit goes to Squaresoft for the scaling. I wish I was that talented at sprite work. :D I just used the tiny overworld sprites for the band.

Thanks BMH! Sorry if I seemed a bit killjoy. I understand perfectly.

I'll suggest some ideas i'd be happy with and if anyones willing to have a go at designing them, as i'm stuck on my phone again, i'd be grateful. If the final selection has one I know i'll join in, then i'm happy in the knowledge I can do my favs as a personal project later on. Yeah i'm happy with that, thanks again my crafty friends!

So to the suggestions...
Dragon Quest
Professor Layton
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Harvest Moon
Street Fighter
Streets of Rage
Angry Birds
Assassins Creed
Final Fantasy
Tomb Raider
Punch Out
Raving Rabbids
Space Invaders
Fire Emblem
Pullblox
Alphabounce
Pacman

Yep thats a good fraction of what I play :)
