It's just regular DMC floss. I use needlework filling stitches for the background.
Also, I use plastic canvas because I find it easier to work with than fabric.

interesting. ive never heard of plastic canvas...where do you buy it at?

Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. It should be around the needlework area, although sometimes it's a bit off to the side.
The smallest I've seen it come in is 14, which is what I use. Most of it is much larger and uses plastic canvas yarn, but you can use floss on the 14.

Wow! I love the combination of embroidery and cross stitch! I've never thought of using plastic canvas... thanks for the tip!!
