My first project- Chun Li/Cammy cushions COMPLETED! (page 2)

Post by DigiPep »

Greetings to you all, crafters! I've been stitching since for 27 years, and playing video games for 20- but I've never combined the two.

I've been so inspired from seeing the results other people have achieved, that I thought I'd share my latest project with you all.

I don't want to give away who the characters are just yet, but I'm using two of the most iconic females from video gaming, and have decided to turn them into cushions for my gaming room.
After getting the sprite rips and spending some time on Photoshop cleaning them up, and getting the colour chemes finalised with matching correct wools, I'm using 10 HPI canvas and Anchor Tapisserie wool and easy-peasy half cross stich, I'll me posting pics as I do them so you can see the build up (I'll also put the patterns on once complete for you all).

Any comments or feedback is welcome- I'm enjoying having the christmas break to work on them so far (although have been making my presents for people which I've only just finished and it's christmas eve!)

Until the next update!

Greetings again!

I've had a day or two of good stitching on these and am making progress- apologies to the purists about not using a frame, but they get onmy nerves and they slow me down no end- it's no big deal, I'll just stretch the finished tapestries when they are finished.

I can't really do much more to them now without giving away who they are, so the next post (hopefully friday) will have quite a bit more on it- I can't believe how quick these are to stitch (and I'm already thinking of my next project).....

Hello again all!

I've managed to have a good few days of solid stitching on my cushions, and I was getting lost without the outlines, so I've used a whole hank of Anchor tapisserie wool and have now completed the outlines of both characters, and as you see, it's Chun Li and Cammy! (well done Holder of Anime- v. impressed you got it from the small amount I'd done!)

I've got a long way to go yet though- after colouring both characters up, I need to do the frames around the characters, and then I'm extending the background with a simple tonal chequerboard (to make them square so they sit properly as cushions).

The actual character graphics are taken from SVC: Card Fighter's Clash on Neo-Geo Pocket- I wanted a really old-school style pixel look, which was easy to do by increasing one pixel from the graphics to 2x2 stitches on the canvas.

I'll get the characters fully coloured up for the next post, so you can see how it's looking- it's moving quick, and I'm hoping to have it done by the end of Jan 2011!

Happy New Year to you all- more stitching fun in 2011 for everyone!

My first project- Chun Li/Cammy cushions WIP update

Post by DigiPep »

Hey there all!

I've been pulling lots of hours in to get the character colours filledon the canvas, and so I'm posting the finished characters here. Don't get me wrong- there's still rather a long way to go, but these are looking nice and bright- my choice of linking colours together works well to stop them looking too chaotic (both girls use the same skin shades, for a start).
Strangely, Chun Li only took about a full day of solid stitching, but Cammy took about three- I think it's due to her having much bigger solid areas of colour on her character- never mind- both are done now.

OK, so next stage- get the outlines around them done, and then fill the background space in with simple blocks (they need to be square designs on completion, to be made into cushions).

I've never done two projects like this together as one, but the progress has been moving really quickly- so all in all I plan to finish totally by the middle of next month!...

Great work on the designs, the colors are so bright and vivid! I'd love to know more about the technique you're using. You mentioned 10 HPI canvas and Anchor Tapisserie wool. Will this produce a more "rugged" final product? (Stronger than just plan old cross stitching?)

Hi Nintendophile!

Using half cross stitch is dead simple as it's good for filling in whole areas (I'm an English lad so in the US it's normally referred to as needlepoint).
It uses linen canvas (which is quite stiff so it is very rugged and thick when finished, which is why it's good for upholstery and cushions)

I'm going to out up a detailed technique guide in the proper forum when the stitching is finished, as to how to stretch and finish the design- but try it- it's really easy and the bright wools allow you to create big areas of colour.
The only downer I find is that the stitches slant in one direction, as oppoosed to cross stitch where the square stitches sit next to each other neatly- this can affect how the image looks (I got around it by doing the giant pixels - see the detail pic of chun-li)

More soon!

Yes, I'd love to have more info on that technique! I see what you mean about slanted stitches, but doing them 2x2 really makes them appear more square. Keep up the great work! ^_^
