It's funny, but that was actually the first one that I read. I was bored one Summer and my brother happened to have just that one on his bookshelf. I read it and then went and bought the previous ones and read through them before going back to school. Before that, I had absolutely no interest in the books. Silly how things turn out. (The story ends with me dressing up and going to the midnight release of the final book.)

As far as preferring reading the book first or watching the show/movie first, I think I prefer having read the books first. I watched the first season of GoT and only then found out about the books. I got through the books pretty quickly atfter that, though, and I am very happy that I did. I'm not one to complain about adaptations one way or the other, I think I just like having as much of the story as I can straight away. If every TV show I watch had book versions, I would definitely read them all. haha

As for what I'm reading now, I was trying to challenge myself. I got a book a while back that is basically just a list of books. 501 Must Read Books or something like that. Anyway, I've kind of been slacking on that front. (I prefer to think of it as I am quite busy with other stuff.) I'm currently about a quarter of the way through Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I am enjoying the book, in fact, I think I might go read some while I cook dinner. :nod

Ugh, I had to read that in school and I hated it! I've been thinking about reading it again without having to study it (as I'm pretty sure having to study a book wrecks it for me, it certainly did when I had to read between every line when I studied 'Pride and Prejudice' too) but we'll see how we go.

I definitely think that when you aren't forced to study something it makes it a bit more enjoyable. For me, the way it's written is a bit different, but other than that I do think it is worth a read so far. Give it a second shot when you have time and if it doesn't grab you, you can always move to something else since you don't need to cross it off a list. hehe :)

I did, yeah. I think that is why I stopped reading them, to be honest, that and I was given Twilight so I read that series until I got bored of it (still haven't read book 4. It was a real chore to get through book 3 lol).

I don't know if audio books count as reading, but I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo a couple days ago.. It's a LONG book. 117 chapters to be exact. Have previously watched the movie but never read it, and while stitching, I needed something new so I listened to it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Before listening to it, I listened to the complete series of The Three Musketeers, which includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte de Bragelone, Ten Years After, Louise de la Valliere (these 3 are all one book seperated into multiple parts), and The Man In the Iron Mask. I also enjoyed them. All of these are by Alexandre Dumas.

At present I am not currently listening to anything, but will most likely start something new in the next couple days when I start working on some more ornaments for my son's video game xmas tree.

I love Alexander Dumas. I'm pretty sure I got through the Count of MC years ago but haven't read the others. I have the ebooks though, so it's just a matter of time. And audio books totally count.

My boyfriend bought me A Song of Ice and Fire series for Christmas. I've been waiting (im)patiently for the new season of Game of Thrones to start up, so this was a good way to get my fill of death and dismemberment lol I'm just in to book two now, A Clash of Kings. They did an excellent job following the books for the show. I'm quite impressed. I thought reading the books would definitely ruin the show haha.

Dumas is classic!
If your looking for another long book to listen to how about War and Peace? Its much easier to listen to then it is to read. Also Agatha Christie is always good. Or some Zorro if your into the swordfighting stuff.

I recently read Will O the Wisp by Hammock and Hutchinson (graphic novel) really eeriely beautiful and interesting with a hoodoo theme throughout. Highly recommended!

Finally getting back to my Ruth Goodman book again, reading has become slightly difficult for me to keep going apart from comics and graphic novels. I really want to avidly read stuff again, I used to love it so much and as a writer its slightly depressing that I can't seem to even finish a chapter these days...

I know none of you know me from Eve yet, but I am just going to jump right in on the books thread. I am such an avid reader and have time now that I'm back at work full time and taking the bus to work. I tried stitching on the bus once but there was so much bouncing around that I just ended up stabbing myself a bunch of times before giving up. I'm also the type to take my lunch and hide in the office to read while I eat.

Right now I'm struggling through a horrible sci-fi thing by Gwyneth Jones. I'm just reading it because there's nothing else I want to read on the Kindle right now. I keep drifting off to sleep which I rarely do when reading on a bouncy bus.

I just finished When It's a Jar by Tom Holt and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's like Douglas Adams and Robert Rankin had a love child and taught him to use a computer.

Before that I read Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop. That was a dark fantasy with well rounded characters. She really takes the time to explain why some of the really monstrous characters are the way they are. Kind of hard to read at parts though. Bad things happen to children so parents beware of this one.

I'm not currently reading these (because I've read them all and am not-so-patiently waiting on the next) but I want to promote Derek Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant series. Action packed, funny, AND all the books except for the short stories pass the Bechdel test. I can't wait for the girls to get old enough to read these. Of course, they won't want to by that time.

I am a sucker for useless knowledge.

That being said, my mother got me a new Uncle John's Bathroom Reader book for Christmas. So I've been working my way through that and absolutely loving it. I have like 6 or 7 of them in my house and none of them actually in the bathroom lol
