I got this recipe for chocolate chip cookies from the mother of an American friend of mine from school. They are absolutely delicious, and easy to make, too.

White Chip Chocolate Cookies
Makes 5 dozen

Ingredients
  • 2 1\4 cups (225g) all-purpose (plain) flour
    2\3 cup (75g) baking cocoa
    1 tsp baking soda
    1\4 tsp salt
1 cup (225g) margarine or butter, softened
    3\4 cup (145g) granulated sugar
2\3 cup (135g) packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract (NOT essence - it really make a difference!)
    2 large eggs
2 cups (360g) white chocolate chips
Method
  • •Preheat oven to 175°C.
•Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.
•Beat butter, both sugars and vanilla extract in a large bowl until creamy.
•Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
•Gradually beat in flour mixture (I suggest using an electric mixer if you can, as the mixture will get very thick).
    •Stir in the chocolate chips.
•Drop by well-rounded teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Space well apart as they will spread during cooking (don't be tempted to overfill the sheets. I always end up baking in several batches to make sure they have enough space).
•Bake for 9-11 minutes or until centres are set (they will still be a bit soft - this is OK. If baked to long they will lose their fudgy squidginess when they cool down).
•Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely (do make sure they're completely cool before putting away in airtight containers, or they will tend to stick together).
These can be made a day or two in advance as long as you keep them in a good, sealed container. I always get lots of compliments on them!
Current projects: 'Heroes' sketch, experiments with surface embroidery.

You should totally make Snickerdoodles- recipe is attached. I've never seen anything like them outside of the US and they are dead easy.

I'd also second the suggestion for using your GoogleFu to figure out the conversion of cups to whatever measure you want to use. Also, I know for a fact you can get measuring cups and things over here that have cups on them. I've got several that have ounces/litres/cups on them that I bought over here.

The cup is slightly different in the EU than it is in the US. I have things that say 'cup' here but it's not the same size as a US cup. On a lot of conversion sites, they have them listed as separate measurements.

They are technically slightly different, but I've been making recipes for years using them interchangeably and its basically no real difference. A quick Google search tells me that even Nigella Lawson thinks so!

Southern Lemonade

8 lemons
1250 ml (5 cups) water
185 ml sugar (3/4 cup)

Juice lemons, strain to remove seeds and excess pulp. Add sugar, water and stir to dissolve sugar. Add some ice and lemon slices optional.

*Add a little (about a tablespoon) grenadine syrup to make pink lemonade. Or use limes and add a little juice from a jar of cherries to make cherry limeade.

Edited to add water in ml.
