Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
I finally started mine! If I get excited, there is a second part to what i'm doing. But I won't tell until i've done the first one. Or you've guessed.

Working on:
Retro X & Y! - lost the pattern and fabric, but it's resurfaced
...and i've lost it again lol
Attempting Diamond Painting
Making like three crochet blankets at once #nolife
slowly amassing floss for the old-style Epic Pokemon

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
I was supposed to cross-stitch all day and I had hoped to have like the third of it done by the end of the day, but instead we finished season 4 of Castle and I barely stitched. But Castle and Beckett finally did it, so it was totally worth sacrificing cross-stitching!!
So that's my WIP picture :
I had to pull a few stitches, the color I had picked really didn't work out with the rest after all... There's not enough choices of blue in satin DMC... I really don't know what I will do... hopefully it won't end up looking stupid... X_x

So that's my WIP picture :
Spoiler
Current projects :
Out of commission after surgery until May.
Currently playing : Speed runs of Biohazard HD Remaster

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
Well, my new project was started yesterday and I've made very nice progress on it.

Next thing to do is the lighter parts of his hair, then check out the garnet color I picked to see if it'll be a good choice for the darker red in his scarf and hair. But this one, even though small compared to my other recent stitchings for the past half year, still going be to cool.

Gosh you guys are doing so well! I thought I was a pretty decent stitcher on the speed until I see you guys. LOL! I spent all weekend stitching (although, for some reason I've been having a lot of unstitching going on lately so maybe that's slowing me down) and this was the best I could do.

Btw Moneky, love the Layton hat!
I'm glad someone is doing DS-related stuff. I was just thinking the other day that the DS isn't getting much love and since I play mine almost every night before bed (although not lately because I've been staying up later to stitch instead of play) I should do something as homage to a DS game I really love.

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
That was about 8 hours 15 minutes of stitching. I figure it'll take me another 7-8 hours at least to complete Hiryu's profile portrait.monkeypeaches wrote:That looks awesome! And it's good that you are now stitching something you feel better about looking at. I know how it feels when something doesn't turn out the way you thought it would in your head. Can't wait to see the finished product
One that I had been wanting to do is Moby from the NES game WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth. I liked this one because I liked her hair and thought it was a nice close up with her holding a crystal, and thought this would be a pretty cross-stitch, but after the Karate Kid disaster I zoomed in on her and saw Coco Bandicoot in her features and coloring. O-kay, that won't do at all. Still cute, but she's supposed to be human, not a humanoid marsupial. Issues here, firstly the shading on her face with what looks like soft orange fur surrounding lighter facial fur, secondly because of the anime style and how her hair falls against the front of her face it makes her forehead look further in and her nose more snout-like. She's still adorable, probably even more so now, but I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of seeing "Bandicoot power!" now. Now all I've gotta do is recolor her hair blonde and give her a blue flower for her hair, and a little netbook in her hand and she's be Moby cosplaying as Coco Bandicoot! But I won't go there, too much unnecessary work, picturing it is enough.

There are some others which I'd like to do which would be very nice.
Before I started on the Karate Kid one I was considering something different, a movie license as well but crafted into two separate but continuous pieces of The Terminator, from the title screen of the T2 game on the NES. Human side in one frame, Terminator endoskeleton in another, and hang them up on the wall side by side. I'm still considering this one (err, two in one), but time as well as major complications happening in my life would make this one hard to complete on time. But if I don't do now, will do sometime down the road I think. I estimate both together would take me somewhere between 70-80 hours to complete. If I had a time machine I could go back to before I started the Karate Kid one and do this project instead, but Skynet hasn't taken over the world, yet.

Who is she? She's the girlfriend of Jake, the hero of the game, Totally Rad. 'Shrugs'. That's okay, I tend to look for characters that most never even heard of. First moment laying eyes on her face, even though she isn't well known, nothing like ones such as other damsels-in-distress such as Princess Toadstool or Zelda, and not any character of heroic proportions such as Samus Aran, I thought, her face is picture perfect, soft, pretty, nice coloring, would make a beautiful portrait I think. Only thing stopping me, again its that question, "who is she?" But then the same can be questioned of most of my choices to cross-stitch.

This one from Vice: Project Doom would be different, a thinking man portrait, hmm. But don't think I'm in the mood just yet and also have another pic from this game that I'm looking to stitch even more than this one, kinda trying to keep it at one grand cross-stitch per NES game, at least to start until I run out of ideas.

I kinda like this image from the title screen of Spy Hunter, but my only issue with it is that looking at these characters makes me think more of Rolling Thunder than a driving game. Now if only there were some cool rides such as a car, speedboat, cycle, and such like the box art has, then that would be something I wouldn't hesitate to stitch. Because when I see these two spies' faces here I think run'n gun using the characters, not driving in a car against bad guys in other cars and such, never actually seeing a single person in-game. Otherwise I like the artwork, its just missing the key element that the game is about. But other thing giving me pause, too much gold.

Not sure if by portraits that we are trying to stick with human faces only, but if flexibility is allowed towards any face, be it beast, monster, robot or dinosaur, I'm actually currently leaning towards the Cyborasaurus from Dynowarz as my next one, but if not, I'm probably going to do it anyway just as my next cross-stitch piece.

Oh, one more thing, a question: Can there be words, a phrase stitched in to go along with a character's portrait?

I don't remember saying human or humanoid only! In fact I certainly welcome non-human portraits, very interested in seeing some!Miss Clawful wrote:Not sure if by portraits that we are trying to stick with human faces only, but if flexibility is allowed towards any face, be it beast, monster, robot or dinosaur, I'm actually currently leaning towards the Cyborasaurus from Dynowarz as my next one, but if not, I'm probably going to do it anyway just as my next cross-stitch piece.
Hmm...I did consider this before putting the challenge thread up and decided against it. Hope that's not any trouble.Miss Clawful wrote:Oh, one more thing, a question: Can there be words, a phrase stitched in to go along with a character's portrait?
But it does give me an idea for something else - interesting/weird/funny game dialogue!
