Sprite Stitch Board!

I have just started quilting by hand but had originally learned how to quilt on a machine from my mother (college + out of state = no machine). I have a couple of ideas in my head and did some searching on google about this but I was wondering if any other quilters here had ever thought about this. I want to try my hand at doing some stained glass quilting with some of the Legend of Zelda stained glass art that is out there. I found some ways of doing it and possibly a new favorite method as I absolutely will not even go near appliqueing anything. Have any of you ever thought about it? If so, how would you go about it?

I have never quilted by hand. For me, it is way too time consuming and I wouldn't have any additional benefit from it. Some people love it though.

If you want to make a stained glass looking piece, if it was me, I would still machine quilt and do it through paper piecing. Here are some examples of what I mean:

It is a technique that takes a little longer, but turns out beautifully. I have always wanted to try a paper pieced quilt, but never seem to have the time.

tnitnetny is probably bang on with suggesting paper piecing. I know most of the one I've seen have been done through appliqué which seems to me to be just as easy as anything else if you're already doing it by hand. I haven't tried it myself but my mother loves it and the quilt she did using it looks amazing. I'm not sure if it will work by hand though (part of what makes it work is the ease of tearing away the paper from the machine stitchings).

When I was searching I found a video from Simply Quilts of a quilt artists who did the stained glass quilting a different way. I guess its sort of like a backwards applique technique. She used a pattern she had made on top of her black fabric and cut out each individual piece and fused it to the back before quilting it all together with a satin stitch on the front. I was thinking of using the same technique but using a blind hemstitch instead. I probably didn't explain that very well so here are the links to the three parts of the show on youtube.

Yeah, that is reverse applique. I have never tried that technique before so can't give you an opinion. I normally don't use fusible batting because it is expensive.

I've done reverse applique, but not the way she's doing it.

I would *NOT* use satin stitch though. Dear god, you'll be there forever. Hers are most likely just button hole stitch on the machine which looks like satin stitch but goes really quickly.
