I was browsing through different crafting blogs when I came across a brand of floss called Cosmo. Reviews say that it doesn't pill or tangle as easily as other brands and they've got large selection of colors as well. Unfortunately, one skein can cost as much as 3 or 4 times more than one skein of more common brands like DMC and they're hard find in stores. They also carry 2 strand spools for more common colors so you don't have to separate them yourself.
I just use DMC as it's what's the most accessible (and cheapest) to me and I like the color choices and sheen, but I'd like to consider other brands too. What do you use?
The sheen of the black you posted there looks awesome. Like you, I use DMC threads. I have a small amount some generic brand of thread that came as a package from when I first started cross stitching, but I don't use it usually. I am using some of it for gridding on larger projects and also on dark aida where the water soluble pen doesn't work so well. I also use it in the projects that are just me messing around.
I normally use DMC, but recently I bought some Anchor and was amazed by how the choices of blues with Anchor is so much better than DMC... Blues that fit better with the bright and bold colors you see in video games. I wouldn't mind looking in other brands as well.
Current projects :
Out of commission after surgery until May.
Currently playing : Speed runs of Biohazard HD Remaster
Doing a quick Google search it actually looks like this is trying to be the poor man's silk thread- or maybe what those in Japan who are learning use instead of silk as it seems to be trying to hit that type of embroidery thread (the really nice sheen, lustre etc). Not really sure I'd use it for cross stitch, but I can see trying some out instead of silk (especially if it isn't as pernickety as silk). Might work well in some ecclesiastical or replica stitchings.
I use DMC as that's what's sold locally. I do, however, have quite a few of JP & Coats which I received from my mom and grandmother. Those are pretty basic colors, so I may use those for projects I'm messing around with. I think I also have an off brand from K-Mart which my grandma had as well (I got all her embroidery thread when we were cleaning out her house)
DMC for my main work. Unless I can't find suitable substitutes for or I feel it shouldn't be messed with, DMC is the easiest to find and most cost effective for me.
I do have variegated in DMC, Anchor, Dinky Dyes (for a project and some not, not sure if I got silk or cotton ATM) & Caron Collection Waterlillies (Silk specific for Dressmakers' Daughter piece by Mirabilia). All very different so I don't stick to one brand here.
I also have a very small collection of Anchor specifically for doing Tatty Teddies. The greys I thought looked different to their closest and I haven't seen a non-Anchor chart as yet for. Also, I love my Tatty Teddies so wanted to stay true XD
