Go you! I've always seen cross stitch as a unisex thing but I get a lot of looks from people who think only 80 year women do this art.....SOOOOOOO not true. I also get a lot of questions about it and people saying it looks too hard.....I couldn't do it...then when they find out how easy/fun it is they're hooked! :zelda

I never really thought about men wanting to cross stitch. How biased of me! I'm so used to men gaping when I whip out the DS in a coffee shop... I can see what it might be like for guys and needles.

Anyway, I'm 22 but I starting sewing when I was 4-5 and I started cross stitch when I was 12. My mom REAAAAAAAALLLLY wanted me to sew because she was so into it but I never really wanted to until now. Too stubborn I guess!

I'm 29 right now, but will be the big 3-0 in January! I am also a dude, and my father in law thinks cross stitching is girly, so he won't be getting one for Christmas!

I got there last Monday (17th) - it didn't live up to the hype that everyone I know was giving it! I can safely say to all the 29ers that my life right now is the same as it was before I got to 30! However, it feels quite interesting to now say "I'm 30" :)

I'm 27 and living in california. I was into every craft as a little kid, I even used to sit during recess under the shade of a tree and work on my latch hook rugs!!
I learned plastic canvas from a girl I met when I went to her house and she had a HUGE plastic canvas dollhouse that her parents helped her make. Did a few cross stitches here and there, but I got back into it again a few years ago when I tried to teach my 11 year old future-sister-in-law, she never finished the pattern I bought her, but I got re-hooked!

I was doing store bought patterns even though I didn't really care for them as much, and would just give them away, until i came across Sprite Stitch while looking at video game themed wedding cakes online. And I've never looked back!

I used to play the SNES :Mario , Sega Genesis :sonic , and Super Nintendo :choco :tri , but stopped playing video games years ago when they switched to 3D (I am a snob who will only play my side scrollers!!)
The only game I've ever played on the newer systems is my beloved BIOSHOCK!!! But I do love to watch my fiance play, since the graphics are so beautiful now and I love the stories! I actually get mad at him if he plays when Im not around because then I miss my stories!!

As to men stitching, alot of the older men I know say that they used cross stitch because they were taught it in boy scouts when they were young. But all the younger guys I know, call me a grandma when I say I cross stitch, but then when they see the patterns i work on they think its awesome! I'm trying to get my fiance to, but he just wont budge, hes too busy playing real video games!

Sorry for the short novel, but this was such an interesting thread! I just love how everyone is so different, yet supportive, and can all come together to share what they love!
Thanks so much Johloh for creating a community that all us geek crafters can be a part of!!!! :clapping:

Happy late birthday! Yea I'm not expecting huge changes, and I'm especially not expecting my life to instantaneously be over as one of our friends who just turned 30 did, but I will just be glad that I'm still sucking air!

People that call you grandma don't understand cross stitching, just like people who think I'm girly for doing it. Cross stitching is just as much of a hobby as anything else, which means it's ok for anyone to do it. Yes a lot of the patterns tend to look girly, but if an artist is limited only to the patterns provided, then are they really an artist? There's nothing wrong with only using premade patterns because that's most of what I do, but learning to make your own patterns opens up a whole new world where you can stitch just about anything! Creativity is not limited to genders, regardless of what some people may say.

Hello everybody ! I'm 30, and I can't remember when I start cross-stitching... I must have made a few Disney... canvas (?) when I was about 10., but that's all... I re-start now ! The November Challenge will be my first project since years. Otherwise, I knit, draw, crochet (a few)... I'm from Northern France... and I'm a girl ; it's not easy to tell on forums :) so, by the way, I wonder how many guys there is here !! anyway it's a very good thing ; I regret there are not more boys who knit or cross stitch (or who dare to say they do !!)

You're so right! I got the KG Chart program and ever since, I 've been making patterns like crazy! There's no way I could ever even actually make a fraction of all the patterns I have made or downloaded from others. I'm actually so proud that I just created my own Kingdom hearts Stained glass picture, I never thought I could create anything of my own. It's so much fun!

And I totally agree, Creativity is not limited to genders, ages, backgrounds, financial means, or even countries! As I'm sure anyone who's ever seen any piece of art can attest to :D
