That stinks! What were you supposed to be doing on the plane? Reading Maxim and drinking scotch? *sigh*ScienceDad wrote:On the topic of being male and cross-stitching, I think my oddest experience was on the plane (for me, a great time to get stitching done is when traveling to conferences) when a stewardess noticed me working on a piece and asked "Is that a cross-stitch?" with a hint of disbelief in her voice. Then she proceeded to bring all the other stewardesses over (one by one - it took ages), as to confirm that she wasn't seeing things or going crazy. One of the other stewardesses was skeptical at first and demanded to see the back of my stitching - fortunately I had just learnt about tucking the thread by then so it didn't look too bad. She grudgingly admitted as much :-)
I do still get some raised eyebrows from crafty shop owners when I come in asking after a big list of DMC flosses or sheets of Aida cloth.![]()

Re: How old is everyone?
I think any kind of stitching will surprise people. Last year on planes I was trying to desperately finish the Christmas presents I was making, and did nothing but spend the 16 hours stitching. I constantly had flight attendants checking on what and how much I was doing and even some passengers.ScienceDad wrote:On the topic of being male and cross-stitching, I think my oddest experience was on the plane (for me, a great time to get stitching done is when traveling to conferences) when a stewardess noticed me working on a piece and asked "Is that a cross-stitch?" with a hint of disbelief in her voice. I wonder how much of it is just that people aren't used to seeing people craft. Last year in the hospital I was knitting a simple hat (albeit with 4 sticks instead of two attached) and the nurses kept telling my boyfriend and mom at how talented I was. I actually undid the entire hat cause it was crap, but they were all impressed anyway.
I'm sure it's a bit more Oooh and Ahhh when you're a guy, but it does happen to us gals as well.

OR when you walk into the haberdashery department of a store and all of the shop assistants come over instantly because they figure you are lost and need help, and then do a double take when you ask them if they have 14count plastic canvas.ScienceDad wrote:On the topic of being male and cross-stitching, I think my oddest experience was on the plane (for me, a great time to get stitching done is when traveling to conferences) when a stewardess noticed me working on a piece and asked "Is that a cross-stitch?" with a hint of disbelief in her voice. The best one was when they asked me if my girlfriend/wife had given me a list.

Re: How old is everyone?
Hi all, I am a 30 year old female from AZ. I have been stitching since I was at least 12, off and on. I am married, with one little girl who is 3 and a dog and a cat. so I don't get as much stitching time as i would like.......but it is totally worth it
I have found that I absolutely LOVE this site! not only are there such cool projects and ideas out there, but everyone on these boards seem so friendly and open. That is, in my opinion, a thing that is harder and harder to find these days.
I haven't dont a ton of geek stitching, but after seeing all these patterns, there are a lot on my to do list! one of my faves though is a book mark i made for my IT guy husband that says 1+1=2.

I'm 22.
It is still funny to me how I can sit in a common room at my college and stitch and people who pass by act like they've never seen anything like it before.
I guess they think that stitching is an old woman's hobby?!

Re: How old is everyone?
I'm 18, and started cross-stitching back in... what, january? I've done a Hedgehog, Wall-E, Charizard, Goose(that I found in my basement. my sister didn't want to do it and so I did. I didn't really like it though. ah well. one day project! WooT!), and am finishing my umbreon tonight.
My sister got me started on it, and I can't stop. The graphic designer in me got loose. lol. Oh, and I am also a male. I've had a ton of people comment on how awesome it was that I knew how to do it. Including my crush. ;D
