Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
Portraits do not usually have dialog, only titles. If you really want to do that then I suggest adding the text AFTER submitting to the contest but BMH will make a final decision.
When I submitted this as an idea for a contest I was drawing from Victorian portraiture:

Victorian photos are often a little surreal and absurd and often had oval or odd shaped frames too...

Cool! But having seen your work, it doesn't surprise me you would know.blackmageheart wrote:I knew. XDMiss Clawful wrote:Who is she? She's the girlfriend of Jake, the hero of the game, Totally Rad. 'Shrugs'.

Alright then! Just wanted to make sure.blackmageheart wrote:I don't remember saying human or humanoid only! In fact I certainly welcome non-human portraits, very interested in seeing some!Miss Clawful wrote:Not sure if by portraits that we are trying to stick with human faces only, but if flexibility is allowed towards any face, be it beast, monster, robot or dinosaur, I'm actually currently leaning towards the Cyborasaurus from Dynowarz as my next one, but if not, I'm probably going to do it anyway just as my next cross-stitch piece.

I'm okay with that, was just throwing out some ideas I had and what the limits were. Most likely wouldn't have done this one anyway. But if/when a game dialogue challenge comes up I'll be ready.blackmageheart wrote:Hmm...I did consider this before putting the challenge thread up and decided against it. Hope that's not any trouble.Miss Clawful wrote:Oh, one more thing, a question: Can there be words, a phrase stitched in to go along with a character's portrait?
But it does give me an idea for something else - interesting/weird/funny game dialogue!

Glad that's all sorted out

Ooh, they are. I love all those strange ornate frames and the far away look in the people's eyeskuja.girl wrote:Victorian photos are often a little surreal and absurd and often had oval or odd shaped frames too...

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
Thanks! I just finished playing Professor Layton and the Unwound Future today actually! I've been wanting to do a Layton cross stitch ever since I started the game, so the portrait challenge was a perfect excuse. I actually play my DS at the same time as you. I stitch late into the night until I feel like my eyes are going to bleed, and then I fall into bed and play a little Layton or Animal Crossing to usher in the good dreamsMeiTow wrote:Btw Moneky, love the Layton hat!I'm glad someone is doing DS-related stuff. I was just thinking the other day that the DS isn't getting much love and since I play mine almost every night before bed (although not lately because I've been staying up later to stitch instead of play) I should do something as homage to a DS game I really love.

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
Well I am going against the grain here. My piece is a snapshot of life in a Dwarf Fortress. This is a family portrait following the birth of a child, and contains multiple heads (and bodies) from a game based in ascii graphics. It is presented as being stitched on one of the legendary artifacts that my dwarfs sometimes go moody and produce. Some might deny that these are true characters, but I feel that once you know details such as a preference for whip vine wine, a detesting of jumping spiders and a fondness for geese for their formation flying, you get a feel that these are more than your ordinary sims. I based the sprites on the Mayday tileset.

For an EVEN weirder example of Victorian portraits check out the "hidden mothers" - they hid mothers under cloth while photographing the children - they look super creepy.

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
I was going to say that BMH helped me with my non-human portrait pattern and didn't say anything about it so I assumed it was ok. LOL!
Monkey-> I started playing the first one a year or two ago and got stuck *not unusual for me and those games* so I put it down and just haven't picked it back up yet. It seems as I get older I get bored with a game quicker and quicker so I have this mondo collection of games I haven't beaten yet. LOL! One that I couldn't put down though was Fossil Fighters 2. My DS is slowly dying as well so I'm trying to save it and not play it as much. Need to save some money and just get a 3ds. lolol

Re: JAN/FEB Challenge - Portraits!
I thought I just found the perfect portrait choice for me! It would have been over 9,300 stitches! Well, if I were to do this one it'd be my largest project yet. I'm still thinking about it, but certainly been wanting to cross-stitch it forever, and it just suddenly occurred to me, this is a portrait. Duh! Do it! But here's the troubling part, all blues. Oh no, I hate blue. I picked out a good selection for it, and was trying to get mentally prepared for tedium. But then something caught my eyes that startled me, I kept focusing on his eyes, or more like the blue mask around his eyes. Awe heck no! I am having some personal issues I think here, I keep seeing flaws in everything. Maybe he'd look fine once I got him done, but the risk is a great amount of time wasted which I could use towards something that isn't looking like something unintended. Hey, I know, put a hat on his head, give him a six-shooter, turn those buildings into cacti, and Ace Harding just became the Lone Ranger.

Who is that masked man?

Perhaps I'll stick with the Dynowarz one afterall. After I finish Hiryu.
