Yeah, we bought one of the first gen PS2s a couple of months after they came out (we had to save up for it because we couldn't just afford to drop almost $300 for one lol). Within 6 months of having it the thing would no longer play dvds or playstation 2 games and had erased the saves on both of my memory cards (just the fact I had Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 saves that were 3/4 of the way through the game or farther makes this particularly sore for me, not to mention other rpgs and long games)! When we called to see about having it fixed they used some bulls*** excuse to say our warranty was voided and it would cost us around $300 to get it fixed. So hubby has refused to buy another playstation since then.
Yeah, they often seem to have trouble with the original versions. Our original ps2 (that we won by being the top fundraiser for the ms readathon in ACT) eventally wore out, not through misuse, once its warranty had expired. By then the ps2 slims were cheap enough, so I bought one and it hasn't missed a beat since.
I know the original ps3's have had a lot of trouble with yellow lights of death (YLOD), they even extended the warranties on a certain batch because they were getting so many problems. After the warranty expired on my brothers's ps3 (not an original one) he got his first dual layer game only to find that his ps3 couldn't read it due to a manufacturing defect. After a long talk with sony they agreed to fix it for him for free thankfully.
I decided to get mine new, but only because I found a pretty good deal that was cheaper than a lot of the used ones on ebay.
