Sprite Stitch Board!

Hey folks,
Feeling nostalgic tonight and was looking up old computer games I played as a kid. Found a lot of them but there are a few I just cannot for the life of me remember. I remembered the Treasure Mountain, Treasure Galaxy, etc; the Putt-Putts and the Pajama Sams; the Math Blasters and Reading Blasters, but two I can't remember. If anybody could help me out?

One was some sort of reading or writing based game, it was animated like a story book kindof, and it was all based on newspapers, or maybe that was just one level, but newspaper element really seems to stick in my mind. I think, though could be very wrong, you might have played as a rabbit? That made me think of Reading Rabbit but not a hundered percent certain. Oh I think there was a carrot picking level in it.

The other I don't remember too much about. It had a witch, and you were i think trying to get to her, or escape from her castle or something? I remember clearly there was a level where you were in a room and to get to the door you have to do something with music notes that are blocking your way. You have a companion and I can remember his saying "High...Low...High...Low" to help you out. There was also a part in that game where it was education about different types of living; urban, suburban, and rural. Oh I just remembered I think the companion(s) and you lived in a tree or some sort of fort?

Anyways, sorry for the vagueness, this is just really bugging me cause I remember I really enjoyed the games and I wanted to get them or find them next time I'm home for my little cousins.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I never played many PC games as a kid so I don't know what ones you're refering to (sorry! I know how annoying it is to try and remember something like that!) but the one game I do remember is Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. It was adorable! All I really remember now is Croc doing his attacking moves going "ker-plow, ker-splat"!

I really love old PC games too (and Apple II ones). I don't think I know the games you mentioned though
But this game with a rabbit reminds me of something... I'm not sure at all. I'll ask my dad ; he must remember better than I...

Could you help us by giving us an approximate "age" of these games? Old for you may not be the same for all of us :D

I remember having to use a typing "game" called Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing (which evidently is still around) in school. I sucked at it - never did learn to type very well. It had a couple of "levels" but the only one I remember was the one with a horse-drawn cart.

At first I thought the second game was part of the King's Quest series...but I don't remember anything with a musical door or having any companions really.

Yeah, speaking of old vs. perception - You know you're on the 'older' side of geek when you talk about things like ataris and games and people give you blank looks. *sigh*

I think those two games were early to mid 90's.

I was also trying to remember one more I forgot to post about, and it's not king's quest, i'm fairly certain. It was a third person game, similar in play style to curse of monkey island in that it was that art style and the third person view with walking from screen to screen like that game. I can't really remember much except that it was some sort of journey, and the part that I can remember is your're in a jungle/woods area and there's a pit in the middle of the forest floor and if you tried to jump over it, you fell in and tiny people tied you up, it was one of the game over parts.

People always recommend King's Quest though I never played them, are they good?

Well sadly I can't be of much help because I didn't play a lot of PC games during that time... we had a Mac for a while before getting a PC... I do remember these though

Inherit the Earth - Adventure/puzzle game that I remember playing with my sister and really enjoying. It actually was also on Windows so I may have played it on Windows i don't remember...

I do have to recommend King's Quest. It was really frustrating playing it as a kid and dying ALL THE TIME, and as an adult...it's still just as hard. Not like games these days that guide you to the right answer haha. It's definitely a love/hate relationship.

Ok, folks....I used to play Castle.

It was a (I know many peeps may scratch their heads at this) DOS game. You played as a little cross symbol and went through rooms that were literally a line graphic in box form. It was partially text based and partially UDRL arrows. I usually died in the dungeon in a flood or when the giant spider (which was represented by the letter M) ate me. I was a pretty lucky kid - Dad has worked in IT my whole life so we got the humongous block PC before anyone else on the block.

In related old person nostalgia - I also loved an educational PC game called Mixed Up Mother Goose (which had considerably better graphics than the one mentioned above) wherein all of the Nursery Rhyme characters had lost the "thing" that made them special and you had to retrieve it. Once you found it and brought it back they would perform "a la cutscene" their complete rhyme. I've been considering finding screenshots of this and stitching them, btw.

And finally...one called Ernie's Big Splash. Yes, Sesame Street's very own Ernie. You had to create a Rube Goldberg-esque connection of parts so that Rubber Ducky could end up in the tub with Ernie. I now come to understand the they included this in an NES game....may have to search for that gem.
