Dang frustrating artist issues!

Why are artists so hard on themselves?

Why can't young artists admit they've improved without sounding like they're fishing for compliments?

And why oh why can't we all just get along? Holy sniffing-butt monkeys, Batman, people are grumpy!

I went to DA which I love. Great art and admittedly the pixel art selection might or might not have stolen items that I'm cross stitching for my own amusement. It's all alleged mind you.

Anyway . . .

There was this person participating in the "Redraw This!" meme, and it was from 2009 to 2013. And the difference was astounding! Like the difference between a 5 year old and a professional great.

And they're all "Gah I haven't improved" blah blah blah.

Of course, they're probably regretting it now - over 430 comments and most of them "Stop fishing for compliments!" Mine included. They just came off as whiny and complaining.

I think the problem is that people tend to be their hardest critic. I draw a lot and people say I'm good, but I really don't see it sometimes. Though, I'll be the first to admit that if I think my drawing is good, I'll "humble brag," then I just seem to come off conceited ;)

That being said, fishing is a tad annoying, no?

With that much of an improvement, yes they were fishing for compliments. However, if we weren't our own worst critics we would never improve-so it's a double edged sword. Honestly, I'm not sure which is worse. Someone who knows they're good and acts like they aren't, or someone who sucks (meaning by the persons standards, since art is relative and is interpreted in different ways) and thinks they're amazing and ignores everyone who critiques them.

Since it's realitive to the topic, check out this flash comic:

It's not mine, but it's really inspriring :pika

Its a quandry. As the artist you can see/hear what you meant to create, overlaying what you actually created, and those two often don't line up. You see all the flaws and lost potential, whereas someone else will not be making that comparison. Someone else can judge a piece on its own merit, and will not be comparing it to what it might have been.

I've been playing violin for about 12 years now, and I am only in the last year or so reaching the point I am happy for people to hear me play. Only now reaching the point that it kinda sounds how I think it should. People have been telling me for for a while that I sound good and they like my playing, but its only just catching up now to the tunes in my head.

It is sort of annoying when you see others do it, but I admit to finding it very hard to bragging about my stuff or even thinking that I'm any good. I'm no artist, but I do write quite a bit and have been for a few years, posting stuff online for the public to see and review. It's a tough line to walk; like RWR said, no one likes to come off as conceited or up themselves, or respond to a comment like "wow, you're really good!" with something like "yeah, I know!". But I think there may be a difference between blatantly fishing for compliments and simply being humble too :)
