Bedroom Tales

Post by QueenBex »

So I've been decorating my bedroom, everything is hectic and my living room is packed with all my bedroom furniture, mainly bookcases and books.

Unfortunately my bed was broken in the early stages of decoration. So I've been sleeping on my sofa, however I am too long for my sofa so I haven't had great sleeps recently.

Anywho, I either save up for 3 or 4 months to get a new bed much like the one I had, therefore continuing to destroy my sleep or I find a cheaper alternative...

Anyone have any suggestions?

beds, divans, futons, big piles of cushions and duvets?? I kinda like that idea of a huge pile of duvets, I'm just wondering if it'll be ok to sleep on...

The good news is that I plan to upcycle my chest of drawers, covering the drawers with old maps. I also plan to transform a corner into a crafting corner, lots of storage, shelves, put my sewing machine and crafty items there, better use for my desk since my laptop destroyed itself...

Lets face it I used to just use my bedroom for sleep, but I'm hoping to make it more user friendly and really use my creative side to make it awesome. The bed breaking was an unfortunate and unexpected downside to all this of course...

I can sympathise with your sleep woes as I suffer from sleep deprivation and I know how precious sleep is!

I do think that nothing really replaces an actual bed or divan with a mattress for good rest. I have slept on a futon (this was a few years back) and I definitely wouldn't recommend it unless you have a really high quality (read: expensive) one. Personally, I like a divan so I can cram the drawers full of stuff - I have to share my room with my daughter so storage is a must!

You really need something better to sleep on as soon as possible but if money's a thing why not get a mattress first? You can at least put that on the floor with a bunch of duvets while you gather the coins for a bed / base. :)

Not sure that's much help, but thought I'd post it anyway! Hope you get sorted out!

I swear by AeroBeds. I slept on one for 3 years before it became a guest bed. MY guests, including my parents, always say they slept great on it too. I got mine off ebay for $86 (it's a queen and usually runs close to $200). I've never had back issues on it and I like firm beds (you can pump it up really firm or soft so that's a nice plus). Other brands are cheaper but Aerobeds are made to last, mine's 8 years old and still going strong (one 1 hole repair!).

I'll actually be sleeping on it next week, as I'm moving and won't have a bed at my new place. I'll let you know if I no longer find it as comfortable as I used to.

My advice would be to get the matress first, and get the best one as you can afford to. As students my bf and I move around a lot and use whatever frame happens to be lying around. He bought a good mattress and seriously, bed frames are completely optional unless you need the under-the-bed storage (and monster population)

Good luck on the craftification :)

I suffer from Insomnia, its on and off so there are periods where I can sleep just fine, but a lot of the time I have difficulty and sleeping on a sofa doesn't help, puts my routines right out.
Thats a good idea, I might just get a matress for now...

I did have an aerobed once, I had terrible time with it, kept going flat and I couldn't find the hole last time, so I got rid of it, my neighbours hated the noise of it being pumped up too...
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm sure they're not all bad, but my experiences with them puts me right off...

Yes I think that might be a good way forward, I'll still have to save up for a bit, but if I get a real good mattress, as you say, I probably won't need a frame. I'm creating tons of new storage so I wouldn't need the under bed space.

Thanks! :D I shall certainly put up pictures of my upcycled drawers once done! :)

Thanks for the chat guys! I reached a low point the other day...

Ah that sucks that you had one with a hole! You usually only have to add a little bit of air to them every few months after they are fully inflated. I think they also have a decent warranty... oh well.

I second (or third?) the buy-a-good-mattress-first plan. You can actually make your own platform to put a mattress on top of (box springs are no longer necessary). My friend's mother made one for me when I was in college, it worked just fine but there are better ones ;)
This one has a lot of good reviews and I might actualy use it too http://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-e ... tform-bed/ as I will be in the mattress/bed market in a few weeks.

Might be worth checking out Freecycled - people giving away stuff they don't want for free, although you may have to arrange collection. There have been a couple of beds/sofa beds on my local freecycle group recently, although they do tend to get taken pretty quickly!

update: the walls are painted, but I discovered a good amount of damp/mould on the ceiling so I've had to sort that out. Now just need some more rollers to paint the ceiling again, then touch up the walls again, then I can finally move my furniture back!

Still sleeping on the sofa, I've gotten used to having a bad back.
