How do you like the new Cosmos? We want to watch it but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm really loving how science is becoming the new 'it' thing.

Everyone on my Twitter feed has been talking about True Detective, and we finally broke down and watched it. Really enjoyable. I haven't watched the last episode yet, but its really rather gripping. And ofc Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are fantastic.

Ha, I have also seen that the amount of love (and money) pouring in over the series has caused the creater to persue a second season. However they havent started production and have no date at the moment (as in probably not untill 2015 at the earlist). As such I will say it was a good first season. like I mentioned before the first 5-10 episodes were fast paced, amazing and really suck you into the story. But when it ended I felt like I just watched a Call of Duty game. Action, with very minimal depth to the story. It was just 20 some episodes of firing out one plot point after the other, with Titan battles thrown in (maybe the first Xenosaga is a better game example). But I know im in the minority on this anime debate haha. I do honestly look forward to more AoT and Im sure the story will, hopefully, develope over time. Just out of curiousity, what does your daughter like about the show?
I liked the first episode of Cosmos. I feel they did a great job of explaining the science in terms and scales just about anyone can understand. It was visually striking. Neil deGrasse Tyson was a great choice for host. If you watched the original or read Carl Sagans works you will notice subtle/and not so subtle homages throughout the first episode. If you know your science you probably wont learn to many new things. They kept it fairly basic with a couple "WOW" figures thrown in. I feel, like Planet Earth, it will be a great resource for middle/high school science teachers.
Ha, I feel you on this one too. I was so glad when Breaking Bad ended just so I didnt have to hear "you should really be watching Breaking Bad". I still hear it for Big Bang Theory, which I tried to watch but couldnt get into for multiple reasons (sorry most of the world). Anywho, I did watch True Detective and I gotta say.....Its pretty good. I agree the story is gripping and the acting is top notch. Matthew McConaughey is going home with an emmy to match his oscar.Eliste wrote:Everyone on my Twitter feed has been talking about True Detective
I also watched the premier for NBCs Believe and ABCs Resurrection. Not sure how I feel about either of them. The acting was "meh" in both. The stories seem like they could be promising though so I renewed them for another 2 episodes each. Anyone else see either of these? I enjoy a good syfy/supernatural show and need something new to watch (you know for when Supernatural is not on).

What do you guys say about Netflix? Is it worth getting? Would you need the internet to watch whatever, or can you just download a show and go and watch it wherever you like?

Re: What are you watching now and why?
You have to have Internet to watch them. It's a streaming service, so no downloading. I like Netflix, but I also have Hulu and Amazon Prime. I think it kind of depends on what you're looking for in a service. I've been watching a lot more Hulu lately simply because they have a lot more anime that's subbed, but my husband mainly watches Netflix. I also get my classic Doctor Who DVDs through the mail through Netflix.QueenBex wrote:What do you guys say about Netflix? Is it worth getting? I really want to be able to watch any series of QI, I have the first 3 on DVD, but it was repeated so much on TV that they deemed it not worth it to put the rest on dvd.

I guess I'll just keep getting dvds and watch the 3 series of QI over and over again, the thing is, its the perfect show to have on whilst cross stitching, the very best. If anyone has suggestions on what I can get thats the same level as QI, I'd love to hear them. (Not really quiz shows, more something you can have periods of listening intently to and periods of not listening at all, and would make me laugh.)

ps. I don't think I'll be getting a tv license for a very long time, even though I do miss regular tv and its difficult to get shows etc. I dunno really, I guess its the thought that the money goes to one broadcasting company, BBC, and not all of them and most of what the BBC produce is not good, not to mention, I'd get distracted way too much. When I visit Mum, it's like a luxury but after a couple of days I've found I've spent most of my time flicking through channels, complaining about adverts and being really bored but watching programmes anyway and hardly getting anything else done at all. I'd much rather watch a few good shows I love then a heap load of rubbish and adverts. :p

Re: What are you watching now and why?
We really enjoyed the first episode of Cosmos and will watch it again. Since it is on at the same time as The Walking Dead and Shameless we'll probably just go ahead and watch it instead of The Walking Dead like we normally do (we still record it because the roommate doesn't watch it live with us).
I watched the first episode of Believe and I enjoyed it enough that I would give it a few more episodes to see if it held my interest but they've decided to have it on on Sunday at the same time as TWD and Shameless and now Cosmos so we'll have to catch it on demand or wait for it to come to Netflix to check it out any further. Darn DVR only recording two shows at once...lol
As for why the kiddo like Attack on Titan...I'm not really sure. My guess is the action. I've noticed she's a big fan of action movies. In fact, we are going to our local comic con this weekend and she is cosplaying Mikasa on one day and Aramin (did I spell that right) on the second day with her friend who is playing two of the other characters (not sure which two lol). She also seems to really love Fairy Tail and she checked out some high school something other one that she really liked and is now watching Chobits and enjoying it. I'm glad she's getting into more anime. I like anime too, I just have to be a mood to watch it and I prefer the more realistic anime (at least animation-wise anyway). I will ask her what she likes about AoT besides the cuteness of Levi and Mikasa and Aramin. She likes playing the mobile game as well even though it is in Japanese and is sad the 3DS game is Japan-only. lol
Honestly Queen B...I'm not sure there *is* anything else like QI. I will be very sad to see it go. LOL! I tend to watch either Late Night Television (like Conan, The Late Show, etc), some mindless sitcom, or documentary shows. I really enjoy Netflix for this reason alone...it's great for documentaries like all the Animal Planet stuff, the stuff about weird stuff like Oddities, and the reality shows I like to watch like Pawn Stars, American Restoration, Deadliest Warrior, Cake Boss, etc. All great stuff to stitch to, imo.

Re: What are you watching now and why?
You need the internet on to watch, but it is entirely worth getting. Then again, I can't imagine not having internet at home. The UK/Irish version used to have crap selection, but these days its actually good. Its not as good for anime as Crunchyroll, but I if I had to choose between the two, it'd definitely be Netflix. You're rarely going to have *this* season's stuff, but if you're like us, that's not an issue anyway.QueenBex wrote:What do you guys say about Netflix? Is it worth getting? The UK version of Netflix has 3 seasons of QI, (seasons 6,7,8). For some reason we thought there was also QI XL, but that may just be what it actually is and not the normal QI as I can only find the one listed.
Tbh, if I could consistently find figure skating somewhere else, I have seriously considered cancelling our TV subscription and just having Netflix and a broadband connection. They're talking about making tv licenses over here mandatory even without a TV if you have a computer, so it may be something that you'll get anyway if England goes the way Ireland's talking about.
The other great thing is you can watch it wherever you are if you have internet connection- its not just for the computer/tv. I will watch stuff on it when I'm away from home on my iphone/tablet so its actually nicely versatile.

Re: What are you watching now and why?
I'm hoping that once I get a job I can afford both internet, a landline phone, and digital tv! Probably not, I'd settle for internet, that would pretty much cover everything wouldn't it
I get on just fine without these things tbh, its a bit frustrating, when I want to connect to sprite stitch or fancy playing a game with someone over the net I can't. My mum records a lot for me, I tend to visit her every other week for the weekend, and I try and fit in as much as I can then end up doing chores and flicking through boring channels!
But luckily I found a place I can go to connect to the internet regularly, but I can't watch shows there or take my PS3 of course lol!
Like I said I get by using dvds, my PS3 does play blurays but comes out way too small to see :p
I've been looking to get more horror and thriller films, anyone have any suggestions?
I have silence of the lambs, the shining, the birds, sleepy hollow, psycho, war of the worlds, prometheus, alien, aliens, I just ordered The Exorcist, another film I've been meaning to see.

Re: What are you watching now and why?
I certainly am feeling that Sunday DVR pain. I have Walking Dead recording, Believe, and now Cosmos. Plus if "Animation Domination" is new I'll usually record everything from the Simpsons through American Dad. Sometimes, so it all fits, I record the 2nd or third late night replay of Walking Dead that way it frees up earlier recording space. I may have to do that with Cosmos too.MeiTow wrote: Darn DVR only recording two shows at once...lol
Thats great you have people to share your interest in anime with. Everyone I know refuses to watch it. They just can't get over the whole idea of, "cartoons are for kids on saturday afternoon" junk. Or, they think all anime is for pervy nerds. Id love to go to a good con someday (San Diego, D.C., New York). Living in Pittsburgh youd figure the Cons would be somewhat decent but our Steel City Con is more a big junky used toy sale, with absolutely no anime or video game stuff. I liked Chobits, solid, charming/ humorus story, and the theme song always gets stuck in my head

I hope Believe is good and Conan is the best
