I started out with the flute when I was in middle school and then picked up electric bass part way through high school so I could join the jazz band. Marched that flute clear through high school and into college for 2 years too. God I miss band....

In Elementary school, everyone learned the recorder. I think that started in like 4th grade? Then in 5th grade, we could pick a different instrument to play. I wanted to do percussion, but my parents said it was too loud and I had to pick something else. So I went with flute. Then in 7th grade, I had the great idea of switching. But not to another wind instrument, oh no. I went with trumpet. And I was TERRIBLE. Like last chair terrible. lol Then I tried the tuba for a bit in 8th grade, and that didn't go well either. Come 9th grade and the introduction to high school and marching band, I changed back to the flute. And played the flute through high school. I even marched piccolo for my senior year. I also dabbled with the clarinet and oboe cause my sister played them. But for concert band, my senior year, I made it up to 3rd chair! And I also did choir from 5th-9th grade. 10th grade I had to choose band or choir cause there wasn't room in my schedule (even without any study halls!).

I would LOVE to learn the piano. Maybe when hubby and I move, I can eventually talk him into buying a piano?? Lol.

I knew someone who hopped instruments in high school. He started off as a French Hornist and then moved on to the Euphonium and eventually ended up on a Tuba. His lips were WAY too thick to play the French Horn. He said he was happiest on the Tuba. But seriously - who steered him the wrong direction?

Our bodies are actually compatible with specific instruments, something I learned early on when I wanted to play the Tenor Sax and was told I had brass chops. (By a specialist music school.)

I took piano lessons & hated it in elementary school. I wish I had stuck with it long enough to learn to play chords.

In junior high & high school I played the alto sax. I have zero rhythm so I was never very good but I always practiced so I even got to be in advanced jazz band. I love structure so the whole idea of solos scared me but it was fun.

I'm definitely going to encourage both my children to play instruments. I think being able to read music is a good skill & a great way to learn math without realizing it.

As a former band director, "steering" people toward certain instruments is generally a way for them to balance their group's instrumentation. There are only a few physical characteristics that can make one instrument more difficult than another (having a teardrop top lip and trying to play flute, for instance, or really wacky teeth) but in general, if someone really wants to play an instrument and don't have a physical characteristic limiting them, their own desire can trump a natural propensity for one instrument vs another.

Also, when I was in the marching band at the University of Texas in 2004, they also did a video game show:

The french horn to tuba guy had the thickest lips I've ever seen on a white guy, and a huge square jaw. Not precisely the pencil line lips and narrow face that makes french horn easier to pick up with its tiny, tiny, oh my goodness how do you DO that, mouthpiece.

So glad I was a Euphonium player. We make good kissers. ^_~
