Re: The Baking Thread!
I actually don't think I've ever used the same recipe twice to be honest. I usually just search for a bread recipe on the internet, then modify it however I see fit. It's basically just flour, yeast (with warm water and sugar if it's dry yeast), butter or maybe oil, milk (you can choose which kind you prefer), sugar to sweeten it if you want, maybe a little oil, salt and whatever the heck else you might want in it. Some people may think there's some science to baking bread, but if so, I haven't found it yet. I just mix the yeast, hot water and a little sugar to get it going, then mix the milk, butter, sugar, salt and water together. Add the yeast mixture after it starts to foam, then mix in the flour one cup at a time until the dough get's thick. Turn it out on a floured surface and knead, adding flower as needed until it is elastic, and not sticky. Roll the dough into a ball, put it in a greased bowl and roll it around until all surfaces are covered, then cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rise at least 30 minutes, or however long it takes it to double in size. Punch it down (literally punch it), and then you can let it rise more, or go ahead and shape it into loaves, put in greased loaf pans, then let it sit and rise a few more minutes in the pans before popping it in the oven. Let it cook somewhere around 30 - 40 minutes somewhere between 350 - 400. I experiment a lot, and like I said, I don't think I've ever followed the same recipe. So, what you can do for your first time is follow a pretty basic bread recipe like THIS ONE until you get the hang of it, and then start experimenting. Have fun with it though, and if your first loaf sucks, just learn from it and make the next one awesome!jadely wrote:Philpepe wrote:Like I said, it was quite tasty. I've been meaning to make more lately, mainly because it tastes so much better than the store bought stuff, but I just haven't made the time.blackmageheart wrote: @Philpepe - that loaf of bread looks wonderful
I've been wanting to try my hand at bread baking. What was the recipe, if you don't mind to share

Nightshade...INCREDIBLE!!! You're only in Melbourne, I should hire you to make my birthday cakes!
One really good bread recipe is to follow along for a good crusty loaf, and before you start baking, add some dried herbs and parmesean cheese. That hot with some good butter...right up there with 'most delicious things ever'!!!

Re: The Baking Thread!
I have a new cake that I did! And so far, it's my favourite. It was for a baby shower and they brought in the invitation. The invite said "Baby shower" in the middle, but they wanted it to say congrats instead.

Gah! This thread is evil. I will post some pics of recent baking geekery once I can find them....they include a Lebowski cake and a Disturbed bunny. My friend and I are very much into the amateur cake decorating thing.

Re: The Baking Thread!
So, here's my initial contribution to the baking thread. The backstory for this cake is that it has been horribly cold and miserable where I am for the past week, and it even snowed the other day (which is pretty darn horrible considering just the other week we were sitting out the glorious sunshine in t-shirts...). The image popped into my head of how the Easter bunny might react to being snowed on when it's time for him to do his little egg-distribution malarkey, and I decided it had to be a cake.
This is my second effort at covering a cake with fondant - I think it came out ok other than the ganache underneath not being quite as smooth as I'd like, and the edges of the board being a little messy (I need a better work surface to roll out the fondant to cover that as well as the cake itself).

Current projects: 'Heroes' sketch, experiments with surface embroidery.

Re: The Baking Thread!
Love the grumpy bunny cake.
We did something a little different at our house.
We made these cupcakes first.
Then we got bored and remembered that we still had dino sprinkles and my hubby amused himself.
