Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
I was reading a lot of comics until we moved to a town without a comic book shop. I was also really lucky to live in Suffolk, which had an excellent county library with a huge graphic novel section, I'm really bummed that in the Netherlands you have to pay to use the library.
I am currently reading Wolverine: Mark Miller Omnibus and so far it is a great read.
I'm a big fan of Wolverine comics. The Wolverine Origins graphic novel is fantastic, and Wolverine Noir is very dark and gritty and a excellent take on Wolverine without his super powers.
If you're more into DC, perhaps, Superman: Red Son is an alternate universe version of the Superman story, where Superman crash-lands in the USSR instead of the USA. And All-Star Superman (this one comes in two volumes) is a beautifully written story about the mortality of Superman and what he means to humanity.
The great things about all of these stories is that they are stand-alone stories, and you don't really need any back ground knowledge on the characters to understand the stories.
If you're looking for any recently released comics, DC's New 52 versions of Detective Comics, Batman and Robin, Superman and Action Comics are really good reads as well as Marvel's new Ultimate Spider-man and the Ultimates.
My boyfriends is telling me to recommend the Authority and pre-New 52 Wildstorm.

Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
I am a life long comic/manga addict and just took a class about them so I'll try to keep my lists short...
Comics and Manga
Comics and Manga
- Blame! (done) - morbid sci-fi manga w/ beautiful art, may be out of print...
- Invincible (ongoing)- the only super hero comic I truly enjoy. written by the creator of the walking dead. Gorgeous art
- Ex Machina (done)- ex-super hero who goes into post 9/11 politics (US). Deals with a lot of social issues while working on a pretty awesome super-hero story.
- The Unwritten (ongoing)- for the literary geeks out there. I can't even catch all of the references to classic lit since I am a sci-fi girl myself :)
- Wasteland (ongoing) - strange story, also littered with politics as well as sci-fi. I own 6 trades and still don't know if I love it but it is a good read.
- Trigun (done) - one of the first manga I ever read to completion. The art and action can be hard to follow but the story and humor are great. The anime doesn't come close to the manga if you've seen it.
- D-Gray man (ongoing) - my guilty pleasure manga. Lots of monsters and weirdness and over 20 volumes so far... go to a library for this one.
- Stuck Rubber Baby - amazing but only for mature readers (sex, violence, language, etc). About the life of a gay man in the American South during the Civil Rights Movement.
- Fun Home - Warning: not fun.About a lesbian and her difficult relationship with her father.
- The Photographer - a comic/photo essay about Afghanistan. An important read but not an easy one.

Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
I have the DC app on my iPad and i've got lots of comics on there. I've even cancelled my standing order at the comic store since it's so much cheaper on the app and easier to read when commuting to work/on lunch and work.

I also recomment Red Hood and the Outlaws, Birds of Prey and Teen Titans for the DC new 52s. Red Hood is by far my favourite.EveningEmma wrote:If you're looking for any recently released comics, DC's New 52 versions of Detective Comics, Batman and Robin, Superman and Action Comics are really good reads as well as Marvel's new Ultimate Spider-man and the Ultimates.
Ally. Check out Kings Comics online. They're based in Sydney. They are amazing, comics are cheaper than in store and shipping is fairly cheap too, oh and the staff are super friendly and helpful (you can call if you cant find it on their site). If you want a standing order I'd recommend Alternate Worlds in Melbourne. They ship out too.Ally wrote:The closest comic shop to me is in the City (Perth) which is 3 hours away, so not as much as I'd like! I love Death Note, but it's weirdly hard to find here! When I do go looking again, I'll check out Bone too!

Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
I've recently started reading the Walking Dead comics. Very good.
Batman. Various batman comics. Knightfall series, Killing Joke, Hush, Death in the Family. All excellent.
I've started reading The Spectre. Some of the silver age up to the newer ones.
Star Wars Dark Empire and Tales of the Jedi are good.
My BF is into a lot of Transformers comics right now, he seems to be enjoying them. Not sure what generation they are.

Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
Oh, man - how did I miss this thread? The latest thing I've picked up was the new Legend of Drizzt graphic novel. Also lately - Dark Crystal origin stories part one (awesome!). I love the graphic novels of the rest of RA Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt and Corona books. The Anita Blake ones are also pretty well done. The Marvel Zombies story line was fun (especially the one with Ash from Army of Darkness). Walking Dead is always a good standby. Beyond that (in the manga sector) I've read Soul Eater, Deathnote, Detroit Metal City (hilarious), Fruits Basket, Fushigi Yugi, and, of course, the obligatory Sailor Moon.

Mind the Gap is an awesome who dunnit with a supernatural twist! I also love the marvel 1602 trades too. Mouse Guard is my absolute favourite!

Re: Anyone read Graphic Novels/ comics?
I'm hugely into Saga at the moment which is from Image. It's sci-fi and been described as star wars meets romeo and juliette, though it's so much cooler than that lol In fact my next project is going to be Saga related.
